I've been working on a project about climate-induced population migration in Atlantic Canada for about a year, and we've finally launched the dashboard with an accompanying blog post in anticipation of engaging with communities for feedback and local knowledge. You should check it out!
The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.
His parents are immigrants like mine, and we definitely bonded over being first-generation Canadians with parents from European countries (i.e. we’re white with weird names) but he still calls it Yugoslavia and it wasn’t till later that I really understood why Bosnian-Serbs left in the 80s 🙃
"You encounter a strange, cult-like group that lives in almost total isolation from the outside world. They jealously guard their arcane knowledge and practice some exceedingly cruel rituals."

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.
Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded.
Apparently I’m making a thread of why letting rich people decide priorities instead of taxing them so our electeds get to make society’s choice is Real Bad

if anyone needs yet another example of why we can’t let the philanthropy of rich people fund the arts, humanities, and other cultural institutions that are so often the first victims of funding cuts, their goal is buying the ability to be the sole arbiters of what is “objective truth” for all of us.
Dating over 30 should go something like„hey I like you and if that‘s mutual we should have dinner and sex in whatever order and eventually figure out how we fit into each other‘s impossibly full adult lives“ and instead we came up with 12 different dating apps and whatever a „situationship“ is
it's understandable to think of constructive debate as an ideal and then to figure that *any* debate is therefore a step towards political values and virtues. but I think most debates, particularly in the social media age, make conversations and outlooks worse than where they started
The fetishisation of "debate" as some sort of grand public good that everyone should do is so thoughtless and jarring to me because the more you actually do it the more it becomes apparent that genuinely constructive debate is actually a pretty niche thing.
Parents, please check your kids’ candy this Halloween. I’ve just found an ancient metal whistle with the inscription “QUIS EST ISTE QUI VENIT" inside a Snickers bar. I blew it and heard a note of infinite distance, and now I’m haunted by a figure in pale, fluttering draperies. Be safe.
You can skip the gender metaphysics debate entirely if you say, "I don't care about that. I care about the material consequences trans people experience for living the way they want to," and then hammer the point home that no amount of gender metaphysics can ever justify transfemicide.

Et voilà ! Notre entrevue avec Radio-Canada est en ligne ! Soyez à l’écoute demain sur les ondes du 105,9, à 8 h 15, pour des explications du Dr Côté !
This is a good reminder that after all of the separatism mania hopefully dies down when the vote fails ... these people will turn their attention back to other crazy bigotry.
And yes, that include Danielle Smith's government too. Expect the anti-trans book bans etc. to kick back into high gear.
On eve of Alberta referendum vote, separatist leader alleges ‘cover up’ in deadly CFB Wainwright tragedy
Alberta separatist leader Jeffrey Rath makes unsubstantiated claims that ‘DEI programs’ and ‘gender fluid’ soldiers may be to blame in CFB Wainwright tragedy
I really hope someone will study the Alberta separatist movement as an example of entirely fabricated & manipulated public opinion now that it went 75-25 against even asking the question.
Like, other recent separatist referendum results?
Québec: 51-49
Scotland: 45-55
Brexit: 52-48
Actual Albertans have no interest in separating whatsoever. It was all made up by foreign interference. We should pay attention to that!
there's a lot to this
even in many FT/TT jobs (now vanishing) your real intellectual community are people you see once a year at a conference; perhaps your employer pays for you to attend and perhaps not
your job itself is a constant effort to prove to your "institution" that your job should exist
The other thing that is missing here is that the turn to online platforms among millennial humanities academics isn’t all about declining opportunities in the academy; it’s also about the rupturing of the possibilities for intellectual camaraderie within the neoliberal university.
Is it good that the richest, most powerful men alive are openly admitting the machines are driving them insane? I don't think it's good personally.

This is so refreshing to read.
When the leadership changed at my corporate job, the shareholder capitalism started to seep in, even though we didn’t have any. Shareholders became defined as our customers, our contractors, where the money is exchanged. I noticed employees weren’t in there anymore.
This god damn machine, hungry and heartless. My whole generation got lost in the margin. We put our faith in you. You turned a profit. Now we’re drowning here under your waves.
this would be a very cool subject to do a retrospective about how radicalization happens and how billionaires can control the conversation and make whatever their pet issue is into a central political issue for everyone, but I have a feeling that this documentary will not be that.
I understand it's different from folks who might be looking for breaking news from an ENTIRE COUNTRY that they can't find here.
But lots of other fandoms and hobby groups and professional communities and whatnot absolutely CAN be moved. You just have to be willing to TRY it!
