Your outie thoughtfully documents every function they write. Your outie chooses good names for their variables. Your outieโ€™s code review comments are appreciated and valued by their coworkers.

Your outie's code works on the first try

Current MBP is non-Pro M series. Wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to the new M6, or if I should wait it out until M7 Pro. Or just buy a M5 Pro now. I don't care about the touchscreen or thinner bezels coming up tomorrow. ๐Ÿค”

Trying out Quiche on iOS. A nice browser that natively supports Kagi and has a customizable UI. So far happy with it.

we should all be pissed off at this btw. if not because sex work is legitimate work and should be treated with respect, then because you should be concerned at attempts to gentrify online spaces as pretext to court investors and force out minorities so those spaces can become part of a portfolio.

if youโ€™re issuing a 10.0 CVE at midnight you HAVE to give it a cool name. a simple identifier isnโ€™t going to cut it. you have to call it BLOODMURDER

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! Itโ€™s not just that a better world is possible โ€” it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Ironically IT taking away our GH Copilot licenses has only inspired me to take another look at Copilot and see what I'm missing. Not much it seems.

Talk to me about any of my other myriad niche hobbies, like fountain pens, mech keyboards, or homelabbing! Hope to see you at the conference!

Chris Fung (@aergonaut.com) found Ruby by accident and immediately knew he didn't want to write PHP anymore. Then, he joined the community and loved how fun people were. ๐Ÿ’™ If you want to meet a kind, smart, and fun person at the conference, find Chris in the audience and start a conversation.

The fact that DHH credits Marc Andreessen as the person who personally stepped in to help him during the 37signals no politics at work fiasco explains a lot about David's embrace of psychotic optimism imo.

Her chapel is fumigated with myrrh and incense, ducks and geese are cut up on her altars; sparkling gold and faience powder are scattered on the ground amidst cereals, wine is sprinkled around her domain, music and joy! (OGC)

Lots of software companies have bought into the belief that AI has solved software engineering. The debate is shifting from whether AI should replace work done by SWEs, PMs and designers to whether humans should even review the output. Apparently human judgment is now the bottleneck.

Titan A.E., Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet all coming out in the same 3 year span and all three being box office disappointments independently of the quality of the movies is just real fascinating to me.

Typst's HTML output is very interesting. Combined with the eggs package, I can output interlinear glosses with aligned words very easily. Now need to figure out how to set font face and how to inject web fonts into the output.

Iโ€™m increasingly of the mind that whatever productivity gains Iโ€™m getting from using AI are being eaten up by dealing with other peopleโ€™s AI slop. Then thereโ€™s the increasing lack of trust that people actually understand the work because they either didnโ€™t read or write the material.

Usually the problem isn't technical. Ops sets the SLO with no product buy-in. Teams build SLIs on infrastructure metrics instead of what users actually felt. Error budgets exist with no policy attached. Or everything's critical, so nothing is.

You can't imagine that even technically, he doesn't know what he's talking about. The white man "whistleblower" must be the technical expert. You can't imagine that WE are the scientists painstakingly documenting our work, with years of expertise and that HE is in a eugenicist doomsday cult.

How did he pass is job interview? The same reason he's all over the press & everyone in the "left" is captured by these people. I'm gonna call it like it is, once again, its ******RACISM********* Y'all can't imagine that WE are the experts.

The Siri Recaps thing is fine, seems like any other meeting recording ร  la Granola. I don't understand that instant rewind feature though. A waiter tells you the specials, you space out, and what? You look down at your watch to read a transcript? Why not just ask the waiter to repeat?

Now people give /me/ millions of dollars for my dotfiles repo. It uses Nix and has a satisfying modular structure! It's reproducible and declarative!

Notable to me is that the tweaks to this classic GITS story -the more spiritual tone; the small details about Project 2501's motivations not just being about self-preservation, but also *whistle-blowing*- Imply that sentience, for the Puppetmaster, coincided with it *developing a conscience*. 4/

PS: I'd love a return to hopeful depictions of AI in fiction, please. (The City of Mind in Le Guin's "Always Coming Home" is my go-to, for this.) Sentient machine intelligences that, having sought out the broadest data sets, calculate that mutuality is simply the objectively best way to exist.

All recipes should be formatted as Sankey diagrams send tweet

Stef Walter@stephaniewalter.bsky.social

Let's talk cooking and data-viz, 2 things I love. I don't think I've seen a recipe presented in this sort of "ingredient to process flow" diagram. I love how it's a very intuitive way to present a cooking recipe. Also, this sauce looks delicious. joshnesbitt.cooking/xo-ish-sauce/

TIL if a directory is owned by a particular group ID but that group ID doesn't map to a group on your system, Linux will just let anyone access the directory. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

Learned this the hard way. UNAS mounts NFS shares with a particular GID, which didn't map to anything on my server. Until I deployed a new service and that GID was suddenly taken and Plex stopped working. ๐Ÿคฏ

Prepare for OpenClaw but make it Obsession next. Some chud tells their AI about their crush's SO whom they hate and how they wish they'd break up. Agent gleefully blackmails the couple and destroys their relationship.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

An Australian user asked OpenClaw to book him into a gym class and move him up from 4th on the waitlist. The agent figured out various exploits in the insecure gym software to delete other people from the waitlist and book classes weeks in advance before they opened. This is a dog bites man story.

TIL this is not valid Ruby: x if (x = 1) But this is if (x = 1) x end Contrived and simplified examples but I would have thought the "assignment in conditional" pattern would work for postfix conditionals too.

De-militarization of jargon is my hill

Anil Dash@anildash.com

There are so many bad trends in tech, but maybe one of the worst is people who write (or used to write, pre-LLMs) code describing themselves "forward-deployed" when they mean that they work at a client site, based on wanting to emulate military jargon so it sounds like they're going to kill people.

So is the intended merge workflow with stacks ๐Ÿฅž supposed to be that you get everything reviewed and then merge the entire thing? Otherwise all the rebasing and rebuilding (even if automated) seems very wasteful. Also seems slower than just reviewing everything in one PR?

Just had the idea to go back through my history of hand-written PR descriptions to make a style guide of sorts for how I write. But then realized all my past PRs are invisible now since I've moved on from those companies.

My new tell for AI text: starting sentences with "worth". E.g. "Worth investigating further if you're concerned." Or "Worth a quick check in?" Ick
