Ok Official Job Update Post #1 . Last Monday I officially began my new job in a trust position as a Museum Technician (Natural Sciences) at Smithsonian’s NMNH in the Department of Entomology. As always, this remains my personal account and none of my posts are on behalf of the Institution.

Anyway, at my big age of 38 I’m navigating things like employer contributions to retirement, transit benefits, employer provided health benefits, leave, etc. for the first time! I’d always been contract or part time, where offerings were meager or non existent or on a ad hoc basis.

As of right now, the position is only expected to last 1 year, so I’ll still be looking for the future. I’m unsure of what I can say about the specific project (the public job posting was for multiple generic positions for two departments) but I will try to find out sooner rather than later.

Chestnut bread, hot and crusty from the ovens, with honey or apple and blackberry preserves to spread on it. Apple pancakes, blueberry scones, and savory tarts were passed to and fro among the beakers of strawberry juice and hot motherwort tea.

Literally the first shot of this "historically accurate" Odyssey movie shows a boat that A) Has no steering oar. B) Is under full sail *and* full rowers while entering a cave, presumably to dock inside.

It's funny how the Defenders of Western Civilization really want Odysseus to be this heroic patriarchal figure when he is canonically kind of a dirtbag.

Michael Clanchy told people over 50 years ago not to fetishize writing, but he would not diminish the significance of writing today because he knew well that it now equates to power and to eschew it is to disempower one's self. I mention this bc we are seeing the emergence of an arch stance on GenAI

One of the annoying effects of AI as a subject in higher ed is how much it brings out the worst of academic-brain. Like, yes, writing is not essential to higher-order thinking; western imperialists imposed literacy as a weapon and deemed cultures lacking alphabetic writing as inferior. It’s true!

Ok new frustration, my day job is managing industrial food logistics and supply chain stuff Which requires a lot of emails and things shipping on time Very Recently , I’ll email someone “did this ship today like you said it would a few weeks ago?” And I get what is clearly an automated response

In a professional capacity, the biggest impact AI has had is that it slows me down and makes everything more annoying bc I have to deal with my coworkers bad use of it Verbose emails, interrupting meetings to ask the AI, AI note takers who are wrong, breaking spreadsheets, people repeating it to me

Is this just weeding though? 30% of the collection seems really excessive? Along with the statement that they plan to use the resultant space for stuff other than books, rather than making space for more books…

Weeding is an important part of curating an active library for its usersnerds , but it would be to the benefit of the entire community for the weeding criteria to be made public. The trust is not present in this situation and so there needs to be transparency.
