At least 18 early voting centers in rural Alaska have not opened as of Friday, state Sen. Bill Wielechowski says. The commonality? All the affected areas have at least a 60% Alaska Native population — with nearly a dozen having Alaska Native populations upwards of 90%: https://demdock.com/4yTW5Ze

Elections always narrow the public imagination so much, even among many leftists. I highly recommend @cbmilstein.bsky.social's collab zine, Our Dreams Don't Fit in Ballot Boxes, for examples of helping people break free from a narrow focus on electoral politics and dare to dream bigger.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

this is honestly invigorating—maybe because the US far right has been on the rise most of my life, maybe because it suggests why the far right being unpopular is not enough. mostly: because it gives us something we can do

Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different

"Trans people are a tiny group with no power" This isn't true, and I hope my trans readers can internalize this. You are more powerful than you think. Trans and gender expansive people are 2.34% of the US population in the latest survey. That is more than enough to swing a race.

Good morning Bluesky This here is a phenomenal thread [btw, I know some people think it's OK if the ages are similar (e.g., a 30-year old assistant prof dates his 27-year old grad student) but IMHO that's not OK because there's a power imbalance & they are YOUR STUDENTS, NOT YOUR DATING POOL]

Reading Srinivasan's Sex as a Pedagogical Failure: so familiar sadly that the reaction to universities being "liable for sexual harassment [arising] from apparently consensual relationships between faculty members and students" was to claim that's anti feminist yalelawjournal.org/feature/sex-...

Talia would know better than I, but the idea of either queerness or queerphobia as a 'western imposition' smacks of western supremacy, as if colonisers are the only people who could invent either queerness or bigotry and that the colonised have no power to define themselves or their own actions.

The plain fact of it is thus: the Trump administration wants to re-segregate higher education. It is a racist project straight-up-no-chaser. Accommodating any of this puts you on the wrong side of history, makes you a collaborator in this project. ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...

ballsandstrikes.orgTrump DOJ: Yale’s Medical School Has Way Too Many Black StudentsThe administration’s view is that the mere presence of students of color at Yale Medical School proves discrimination against white people.

Medicine. Yes, medical professionals can still be dodgy, but the people working on medical advancements are amazing. We now have mRNA vaccines for cancer relapse prevention, as well as tech to program someone's own immune system to attack their cancers. PrEP? AMAZING. CRISPR? ALSO AMAZING.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

found out that my mother in law decided she was aggressively pro trans rights literally by going, I don't know anything about this but everyone who is against trans rights is also against free school lunch, the issue I know and care a lot about, so this must be the correct way to feel about this

Watched The Love Hypothesis and by that I mean I made it to the title card and then immediately turned it off because “lab bathrooms” where you dump regeants down the drain do not exist.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
