all the people without context screaming at porn for being exploitative, but the actual exploitation that is currently happening is due to a small group of people stealing ethically produced porn from independent creators and flipping it for ad revenue deeply frustrating shit

ooh, I like this take - all the elements are present, so call it what it is: not liminal (which was never quite right, tbh), but gothic for a new generation of people who don’t remember why we built that shit in the first place, or what it was supposed to be *for*
also a shoutout to @shirachess.bsky.social's excellent essay about Backrooms and the Institutional Gothic, which you should read!! thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/backrooms-an...

As a new Harry Potter trailer makes the rounds, it bears repeating that there’s no way to watch this show without supporting J.K. Rowling’s bigotry and the structural violence she’s inflicting on the trans community.

Anyone who makes comedy knows that most of the information you are transmitting in any piece of work is hidden intent, subtext and motive. Computers and LLMs cannot have those things. You can put them in yourself, read what was absent. But you get annoyed when you realise there was nothing there.

I don't argue that AI can't generate something that sounds pleasant but that feeling of awe and delight because of another being, the sudden silence and the almost intimate ambience created by their playing was something that is so so quintessentially human that no machine can copy it
I am sitting in the lobby waiting for the restaurant to open. The bar's nearby and there's a piano there too. Suddenly I hear soft music playing, somebody must have sat down to play some tunes. The immediate sense of delight and awe I felt made me realise how AI can never achieve that sensation

We also just watched Monkey Man, which says "DO kill the dude who killed your mom, and kill him super badassfully and in order to protect the marginalized people whose neck he's standing on, and also use a firework attack and an army of hijiras to do it!" That resonates with me much more.

FWIW from my teeny tiny perspective as a freelance writer, I am not going to watch the Harry Potter show, I am not going to pitch on it, and I will decline any assignments if offered. I could really use the money, but it's not worth the cost of hurting trans lives.
I don't know how effective a viewer boycott of the show could be--I guess we'll see--but I do think a media boycott would have some impact. If all the websites that would ordinarily cover this from every angle just greet it with oceans of silence...maybe it'd mean something.

City parks in Seattle WA have these distinctive rainbow signs with some sort of lightly-serif font
I was hoping for your help with something. (Please RT for reach.) Is there a particular font that’s instantly recognizable to someone who lives where you do, and appreciated/recognized/hated there, but completely unknown elsewhere? Road signs, street names, transit, infrastructure, stuff like that?

It's not just that they're corrupt... it's that they suck at being corrupt...
To understand how the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool repairs veered off course, The New York Times reviewed dozens of internal government documents and spoke to several people familiar with the project. This is the untold back story of the fallout. nyti.ms/4gj7ag7
