Efficient should mean something we can run on a computer. This is less mathematically formalizable than we’d like to admit.

When they tell us "there is no alternative," what they mean is "stop trying to think of alternatives." To imagine radically is to move beyond the helplessness of prediction: a radical imagination dares to insist that history is what we make, not what happens to us.

I am minded once again of the principle that if a company has to force its employees to use a tool, that tool is probably not fit for purpose

just like the fossil fuel industry and CCS, the most fun response is to say "Okay: your product is dangerous. So we're banning data centres, taxing LLM products and encouraging institutional bans on chatbots". And watch them scream with wide eyes

not only does this report confirm morbidly wealthy shitbags are massively inflating AI firms' value/import but it also explodes the lie that "AI makes us more efficient"

This analyst's report from Apollo about AI uses the term "S&P 493" to refer to the "S&P 500 minus the Mag 7" - because if you take out the AI companies, the S&P 500 is tanking. www.apollo.com/wealth/insig...

While we discuss with colleagues in academia about the ethics of using AI, trying to choose the right tone in order to avoid shattering what little remains of their spine with statements a bit too strongly worded, this is what they’re actually contributing to in the real world.

I wonder how it will give working class men influence by replacing their jobs. But as always nobody cares as long as it hurts someone you hate.

Andreas Flierl reposted

Or maybe don’t do that. Do the ethical thing instead: your job.

We should maximize the amount of proof we can get out of AI while the money cannon is on. It's like early days of Uber, except the benefits are 100x more tangible. A fully-verified hw+sw stack? That's like gold everyone can share w/out having to divide. Generational opportunity.

My current I guess coldest AI take is that LLMs, agents, etc biggest trick is persuading people that it does something they couldn't do themselves while in practical terms being limited to being precisely as reliable as they are competent to assess and ensure.

First, automation is not what you think! No system which is automated has within it machines or processes that require no human oversight. Automation is actually not what you seem to think if you think the OP statements. It may be time to engage with psychological research in this area!

Looking for game devs who have been directly inspired by anything BioWare for my next video. I suspect the public likely doesn’t quite realize the extent of their influence on the industry, so I’d really like to highlight that. If you are one such game devs, pls reply to this post!

“oh no AI is a big security risk, you should buy more AI tokens to make your software more secure” say AI companies who desperately need to sell more tokens to keep up their inflated valuations

A stronger reminder that no the SS were not all hanged, only a tiny amount of the Nazi leadership was hanged and most got away without punishment. Many people in the SS would live long lives, stay in high society and business. This is one of the failures of denazification we are still dealing with.

Well, Lindsey is already reaping the "benefits" of being a hate-filled, evil motherfucker. The rest will get what they deserve as well - in this life or the next.

The conclusion is NOT "we need to debias LLMs" Besides that it's impossible, it also detracts from the point, which is: We shouldn't use machines to offload of the very cognition that is constitutive of the work to be done & supercharge existing inequities and injustices in the process. 🧵

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

AOC: "As AI begins to encroach in our society, their goal is to take your cognition away from you. AI's goal is to take your thoughts away from you, your ability to think away from you, so that you become dependent on a machine ... reading books is active resistance"

So much of AI adoption is driven by fear. Fear of missing out. Fear of falling behind. Fear of losing one's job. Fear of becoming irrelevant. That alone should ring all alarm bells.

This is exactly the principle that has fucked up everything from deli flyers to UX in billion-dollar products Once upon a time, even if you were doing something on your own, it took long enough to do that it made you think about what you were doing! You had time to think "hang on, this sucks."
