Raise your hand if you are an Arab scientist. 👋🏽 I say this with all the disrespect intended. Fuck you.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

See your problem here is that you’re framing this as government businesses where actually they are government services that they like to pretend are businesses. Government services are what governments are supposed to spend money on for the public good.

I *think* this comes from Dietz in 1995: doi.org/10.1021/ci00... And then Gasteiger in 1997: doi.org/10.1021/ci97... But, "valence bonds don't always represent chemistry" has been obvious to inorganic / organometallic chemists for a *long* time.

There’s a moment in every chemist’s life when you realise you’ve been told fairytales. Maybe one turning point, maybe a series of small realisations throughout your education. Guillermo Restrepo reflects on one such example: how we draw molecules. #ChemSky www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/stop...

Has this person never heard of the "hundreds of arrows" method of drawing molecules? Because I've been told that is a far superior method of structures

For a lot of these people, trans sports bans are a foot in the door to reducing or eliminating sports participation for all girls Don’t let them get away with any of it

Samantha Brennan@samanthabrennan.bsky.social

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

The government and scientists have been hiding moon crystals from us??

Nereide@drnereide.bsky.social

A study by Greer et al. (Geochemical Perspectives Letters, 23 Oct 2023) claims our #Moon is about 40 million years older than thought, by analyzing lunar crystals gathered by the Apollo 17 crew in 1972. geochemicalperspectivesletters.org/article2334/ 🔭🧪⚛️

It's not "bloat." It's not the fancy climbing wall. It's not the faculty. It's a simple fact: We collectively decided to stop funding higher education as a public good.

Do what you want with A.I. tools but I, sans assistance, overhauled the next four assignments in my course (new activities, new questions, the whole shebang) in the 20 minutes I was sitting in the classroom before class started today Now, I wouldn't say I'm a modern day John Henry... but I kinda am

The enrollment cap in my Organic II course has risen from 211 to 260 between Spring 2024 and Spring 2027. This has put specs grading the course into serious jeopardy. Freaking out just a bit about how to handle the load. Anyone out there innovating in very large Organic courses? #chemsky

Working in nuclear, I am a big fan of strong regulation & inspection. Chemical plants & oil refineries get off too easy & have killed way more people than nuclear power ever will.

Exxon Valdez released about a quarter million barrels. Deepwater Horizon let out about 5 million. Kharg Island has storage for about 30 million barrels, and some pipelines running in from the mainland, so howzabout we just *not* do a huge environmental disaster

Shipwreck@shipwreck75.bsky.social

White House is considering targeted strikes on Kharg Island, which handles approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports. The goal is to force concessions on Tehran's nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz before the US midterm elections on Nov. 3.

I honestly love that at 7:15 the sidewalks fill with bigs and littles (and some dog) all rushing the same way, at 7:30 the bigs and dogs amble back the way they came, at 7:45 everyone is back home, and if you woke up at 8 you wouldn't know any of it.

P.S. Have you thought about wearing a helmet at all times between matriculation and graduation? (there are sooo many concussions)

Yes! I, too, spend a lot of time on ozone in my gen chem class because it shows how science can solve problems and that international cooperation can lead to good outcomes

Update: I played through the original Portal last night (what a great game). I think I'm going to run through the plateau in BotW tonight and see if I want to keep doing that or go on to Portal 2 next

Thinking about spending my down time re-playing a video game instead of being online Trying to descide between Breath of the Wild or the Portal series

Crisp temperatures and slightly chilly breeze paired well with a cloudless, sunny day for travel soccer in central Virginia Good conditions today for players and spectators alike... fall does seem to be here finally
