See your problem here is that you’re framing this as government businesses where actually they are government services that they like to pretend are businesses. Government services are what governments are supposed to spend money on for the public good.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Went down a rabbit hole about The Eastern Dark and discovered that Bill Gibson briefly joined the Lemonheads which led me to their Wikipedia page where the list of ex members is exactly 1 screen long on my phone. I thought you should know.

Much sadness. Official confirmation from Edgell (well actually the parent company Simplot consumer info line) that the Edgell's sauerkraut has been discontinued due to poor sales. Harumph.

WTH has happened to Edgell’s tinned sauerkraut? Can’t be found anywhere. After they canned the red cabbage a few years ago I was worried. But it seemed to hold on. Superior in taste at least in this household’s opinion to the various imported options. But now I’m worried again.

Hey #NMRChat! You’ll want to see this 60 Minutes segment on the impact of the current helium situation on science, industry, and national security. BONUS: Part was filmed in my lab at UChicago! They interviewed Biomolecular NMR’s Joe Sachleben in my photogenic chem NMR lab. #helium #realtimechem

No helium means no new smartphones, laptops, cars, MRI machines, or missiles. This irreplaceable resource is now in short supply as the war with Iran continues. Jon Wertheim reports, Sunday on 60 Minutes.

This is really well done. By Mark and by the Times.

🧵🧵🧵 The NY Times posted a 15-minute video today in which I got to tell NYT what’s wrong with its coverage. They said they saw my critical posts on Bluesky and invited me to do a video with them to air my grievances. Weird, right? I didn’t hold back. I blasted their sanewashing of MAGA extremism.

WTF? He felt bad that they’d done it when they found out it was the missing girl. But he thought it was an old indigenous person. So that would be AOK?

This is horrifying Tuskegee-level shit.

Stand Up for Science!@standupforscience.net

The CDC just re-opened a previously shelved study that would withhold the hepatitis B vaccine from children in Guinea-Bissau, despite decades of evidence showing it is safe and effective. This is a violation of human rights, using “science” to harm some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

Just watched part 1 of this doco. Normally I have the TV on as background noise while doing some late night work shit on my laptop. Couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. Chrissy always demanded full attention #AustralianStory #ChrissyAmphlett #divinyls

Oh dear. I think maybe I’m not the NYT target audience anymore. There’s only 3 shows on this list that I’ve managed to sit through a whole episode

Also he’s out by three orders of magnitude with his guess of the number of transistors in a modern CPU or GPU. Shocking for the head of a chip company
