This might be from the backburner since last month, but here we are needing to address the thing. If you have questions about the community permaban at HC Slack last month, see also https://gitlab.com/andreijiroh-dev/hackclub-final-signoff.

Would y'all mind tagging all your artist/creator friends? <3 I'd hate for someone awesome to miss the opportunity to share their experience/knowledge/opinions with the rest of the Atmosphere!
Creatives!! Artists, musicians, writers, game designers, content creators, culture makers and culture experts, members/curators of fandom!
Please consider submitting an application to speak as part of the CREATE track at Atmosphere Conf 2027! atmosphereconf.org/speak
Spent too much time creating the preview image for:

I pulled the current profile pics of the Bluesky accounts for each of the apps that the cross-lexicon For You feed shows. Not sure what's the deal with @pckt.blog
Can you spot an Easter egg?
Did you know that we gave a lighting talk at DWeb Camp in July?
It's a friendly explainer of what Semble is, check it out or share with a curious friend!

Agreed, the whole essay is excellent & a very useful frame.
"We have spent centuries building institutions for teaching knowledge [and] certifying expertise. We have paid much less systematic attention to teaching people to ride their own brains."
ty @disnetdev.com for bringing it to my attention
Last Friday was the soft launch of oso.social. Log in with your existing handle, or request an invite code to create one. Over the past few months, we've worked closely with the @eurosky.social team, @40verse.social, Robin van de Griend and @tylerjfisher.com to make this possible.
i can't count that one! profiles don't have a country field, so nothing in the records says who's Filipino. and i wouldn't guess at anyone's queerness, disability or fursona from their posts. that's theirs to share, not mine to infer.
some folks reported not being able to use certain adult-focused platforms (like onlyfans and fansly) — there was an internal miscommunication and these were accidentally added to the list of disallowed domains.
this is now fixed! but you may need to refresh your app to get the update. 💙
good morning from the Philippines, @poe.atpota.to! do you think @bsky.app is getting into the "bus factor of one" situation in the future, given that most accounts are hosted on its servers, amongside being the lead dev for atproto?
But Atmosphere is more than just microblogging and more than Bluesky. There are Atmosphere apps that offer a different experience than Bluesky. For example, @sifa.id, @flashes.blue, @skylight.social, @sill.social and many others.
Witchsky is not updating to the latest Bluesky version yet as it still has some bugs affecting web users!
(and because they're blocking adult links instead of using the labeling system that already exists... once the former is fixed on their end, maybe we could help fix the latter!)
With Arc dead, come to Firefox. Let's not give Chromium any more market share. A thriving web is a diverse one.
If you want something really close to the Arc experience, check out Zen. zen-browser.app
70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
"Same foods" are another reason why parents should be seeking autistic wisdom: Otherwise how would one know how important same foods can be for a very young and/or nonspeaking autistic child? And how great is the risk that that same child's distress over food gets dismissed as "autistic behavior"?
Props to autistic 'same foods' (self-selected, dependable, repeated foods), as they can be "vital for emotional regulation, stability, & joy" and also when discussed in community may provide "connectedness & reduced isolation through shared experiences." New paper:

It's admittedly a little disheartening when the projects I work on (music, stories, etc) barely get a handful of likes but throwaway/shitposts get 25+ consistently :/ Idk
Maybe the real moats are the drawbridges we'll build along the way?
In my latest augment piece, I re-think "moats" for the open social web by seeing what @standard.site, @blackskyweb.xyz's Acorn, and bridges like @ap.brid.gy + @wafrn.net have done for the ecosystem.
atproto is public by default... which is great until your app needs a private group, or an invite list, or a draft.
HappyProto comes with atproto spaces already enabled. You can have permissioned data for your users, even if their PDS doesn't support it yet.

crypto natives: Not your keys, not your crypto
atproto natives: Not your rotation keys, not your Atmosphere account
self-hosters, probably: Not your infra, not your data (idk if that would work since there are hyperscale cloud hosting services, aka the Big 3 cloud infra providers)
For the past year, I've been working hard on HappyView. I've built so many features, and there are now hundreds of apps built on top of it. It's been a long, winding ride, and I've loved every minute of it.

Worth a read. I feel strongly that the best funded ATproto company should be focused primarily on the protocol and atmosphere, not microblogging, and here’s a thin slice example of where it could redirect focus
🎧 currently on its release listening party lately, on the wishlist right now (although I'll probably pay for the fan club sub for a month (USD 7 is PHP ~441.08 before exchange rate fees from my bank) rather than manually buying them one-by-one)

I want to express my best wishes to Pope Leo following his surgery yesterday.
His serenity and strength are an inspiration for all of us.
We hope for his full and speedy recovery.

There is a well-worn path from "uwu no politics" to "how was I supposed to know they were bad?"
The fandom we get depends on who and what we support. Folks who ignore the shitty people in their spaces don't realize how it pushes the cool people out of that space until only the shitty ones are left.
"UwU no pawatics" is how actual Nazis and the alt-right stay embedded in furry spaces, though. It's why you didn't know PeaceWolf's actual acts. It's why people are still giving money to Vivid Publishing or buying pooltoys from Horseplay. Intentionally not knowing makes you less safe.
Today is International Coming Out Day.
For many people, including me, it was one of the hardest things we've ever had to do.
I just wanted to express my support for people who are still struggling, waiting or scared.
You are not alone.
Love, Nyuff 🧡💙
I know a LOT of Black, trans, disabled, fat, and ND people who still use X & who are absolutely far stronger pracitioners of revolutionary and liberatory politics than many of the folks on Bluesky.
It might be that some of us have a lot more experience living & thriving under oppression.

I want to know why everyone is certain that somehow this means everything that was good about Deko is definitely going to disappear and there’s no way it gets picked up sup by any other maintainer or foundation.
The cynicism is so exhausting and bewildering
It's kind of heart wrenching reading all the posts from current Deno staff trying to sound positive about the Cloudflare acquisition and the death of the thing they worked on.
lately i've been seeing so many platforms removing API access to their data specifically to deter AI from scraping them (see reddit and riot games' league of legends replay system), which overall just makes the internet more closed than ever, something that is inherently against the point of the net
something I don't like about the current state of tech is how things are actively moving to secret/unwritten rules in an effort to prevent AI from gaming systems. backchannels have always been a thing (both good and bad) but feels like they're becoming the ONLY option
One of the interesting things I’m curious to learn as we move forward is whether abusive behavior towards LLMs that was not present previously in a person actually predicts their behavior towards other humans.
Karma is conditioned behavior, doesn’t matter who or what you’re being cruel to, you’re still building the cruelty muscle.
Bad take, do better.
Also users who enjoy being cruel are awful users you don’t want, ask me how I know.
