Via @stephenjcaruso.bsky.social, who really should post here more than there, I'm counting $8.52M from Jeffrey Yass to try to preserve a GOP state senate majority in PA (candidate giving, SRCC, and State GOP) and another $1.1M to stanch the bleeding in the state house, where Dems lead 103-100.

even ignoring the people this leaves out (and also ignoring that originalism has always been a bad-faith grift), isn’t it convenient to be able to point to some imaginary composite 19th century bar patron rather than someone who actually left behind a record of what they thought

we fucking loved it, even when there was basically nothing on it, and let me tell you something else: we loved it because of human connection, human diversity, human creativity. WE DON'T NEED A SINGLE THING ANY OF THESE COMEMIERDAS HAVE MADE AND TRIED TO SELL US IN ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT INTERNET.
i especially love all the dopes saying “when the internet first went mainstream everyone hated it too” like it happened in the pioneer days so no one can dispute it, like mf’ers we were THERE

the funniest thing about the "we don't trust the media" people is that they will trust literally anyone else. like, if you have an image and text, they'll buy it. shaking keys at babies type logic.
I don’t trust the mainstream media, but I feel like the primary alternate model, getting the news from the posts of a 14 year-old Romanian schizophrenic shitposter named “G00n3R the Swamp Pervert,” is not necessarily a superior alternative.

I saw a man on a train in a full business suit finishing a foamy Starbucks drink. He slurped the bottom with the straw, then he used the straw to scoop foam bits into his mouth, then he methodically ran his finger around the entire inside of the cup so he could lick the flavor off. It was 3pm.
recently i was on a train and saw a guy come to his seat with an amtrak hotdog. he extracted the hotdog from its bun and sliced it into thirds. then he produced a loaf of sliced bread from his carryon and laid the thirds out on a slice of it and ate it like that. obviously i will never get over this

Why were there only 3 measles deaths in the last 10 years Robert
RFK Jr defends measles: "In 10 years, there have been 3 measles deaths in America. There are now about 1.2 million deaths every year from food-induced illness. The media and certain demagogic politicians are constantly trying to scare us about infectious disease."

So proud of my brother for having produced this documentary about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library that made clear the scope of one of Dolly’s many precious gifts to our world.

Dolly Parton, among a thousand other amazing things she did in her life, gifted over 330 million books to kids through her Imagination Library program. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the world, but you can support the program today to keep it going imaginationlibrary.com

The Imagination Library is a truly wonderful thing, a beautiful idea that meant so much to so many people at home and all over the world
Here's the official announcement of Parton's passing from her reps, along with the request that in lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at www.imaginationlibrary.com

it’s just very funny to me how much credulous coverage this guy gets when all he’s done *so far* is live to be a 48 year old man who looks exactly 48 years old.
Bryan Johnson, a wealthy tech entrepreneur whose slogan is “Don’t Die,” has called himself “the healthiest person on the planet.” He consumes little meat, but a lot of collagen peptides and supplements in order to defeat mortality. Why is his goal to make it possible to live forever? nyti.ms/4im4Nuj

This guy is so much less interesting than the media's bizarre obsession with writing the same story about him over and over

I’m still on board with Strange New Worlds but it has been weird to see it morph from “classicist Star Trek” to an almost Community-esque “A THEMED GIMMICK FOR EVERY EPISODE” show
Star Trek: Strange New World went back to the comedy well again for an episode where the Enterprise crew got turned into puppets. My review:

Though you may not support the sites on account of how they’re all terrible now, important to know Screenrant, Collider, CBR, Polygon, and other companies all deteriorated because they were bought out by Valnet, a truly heinous company started by shitbags.
There are several, and it's on the Valnet and CBR wiki! My professional life is in shambles but I do enjoy that is easy to find what happened. Beyond that, The Wrap did some incredible reporting on the hostility one of my coworkers faced after we were fired. www.thewrap.com/valnet-emplo...

For example, during Woke 1.0 @davekarpf.bsky.social made a joking reference to Bret Stephens being a begbug, causing Stephens to try to get Dave fired. That was crazy.
The problem with Woke 1 was its lack of proportionality. That's why everyone who tweeted about how racism is bad should be sent to the Hague. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/18/o...
losing my mind a little about this NYT article where they write about "hanging out at a friend's place" like someone just invented it because of The Economy www.nytimes.com/2026/08/19/n...

A reminder of the news that came out of Philadelphia hospitals in 2020:
RFK Jr: Trump wanted to end lockdowns. In Fauci's diary, he talks about how the president was calling him trying to get him to reopen the country BASH: The lockdowns were down by governors K: They cited Fauci B: Govs were hearing from hospitals that their ICUs were overrun K: That's not true

I know people are tired and overworked, but I feel like oftentimes they’re offloading a creative (and, on some level, rewarding) activity to free up time that they’ll ultimately spend scrolling on their phones—thereby further reducing their brains to mush. it’s a vicious cycle of meaninglessness
