honest question: why isn't the film industry like this? why do "niche" movies with relatively high budgets (in the tens of millions at least) still get made on a very healthy quantity every year, while games have to deal with this kind of thing? there must be a way

developers, don't port your (windows-native) game to linux. I've been daily driving linux since 2012, I do all my PC gaming on linux, and I can't name a single game where the linux-native build works better than proton proton is just too good, native linux builds are a waste of time and resources

every time I buy a game with a linux build I have the same experience: >run game >it doesn't run at all, or works with issues >switch to proton compatibility >everything is perfect invest on macOS builds instead! macOS is actually the weakest of the big 3 OSes in game support

"but what if I'm not releasing on steam?" then it makes more sense to have a native linux build, but I personally would still just add the windows build to the steam client and run it with proton I still think it isn't worth the effort of maintaining a whole extra build when proton exists

it's a two-way relationship. the more money/time you have, the more stuff you want to add. no game is ever complete, there's always more stuff that could be added, reworked, expanded I think this is the most important lesson learned from releasing a game, knowing when to stop developing it

moral of the story: no matter what game you are funding, what it earns via kickstarter is always, always, always just a fraction of the money needed to make it. often less than 50%. what "looks" like a game "worth" a $(xx),000 goal is a completely arbitrary aesthetic metric youtu.be/33bCpsyXNx4?...

tech bros treat art the same way a 2 month old baby treats the world in general, always looking for comfort and pleasure. you can't explain to a guy like this that 'music' isn't a synonym of 'pleasant sounds', that there are reasons beyond 'this is comfortable to my senses' to appreciate art

No that same person posted this it’s somehow even sadder than you think

they are like "why would I want to know what's in the mind of other people? why would I want to take a look into another person's thoughts, experiences and feelings? why would I want to listen to what someone else has to say about life and humanity and the world and everything? that's so dumb"

I'm at a crossroads with my project. there are two options - switch to wheeled cars. I think cars do have more appeal with players, but it would require a lot of additional work - double down on floating. more faithful to my initial vision for this project, and much simpler physics 🤔

For most of the past quarter of a century Brazil was dominated by the Workers’ Party, a left-wing alliance of trade-unionist, progressive Catholics and academics. That era is over bit.ly/4dmUZNB Photo: Getty Images
