Questioning power, debate, dissent and moral argument are among the best of the Hindu tradition. @ashoswai writes on why diaspora protests matter beyond crowd size, and why criticism of a government is not criticism of India. buff.ly/MQoM4N2

One thing I'm sure you've noticed if you know Republican women is that almost without exception, they are extremely religious. I worked in Republican politics for 11 years and ran into fewer than 5 women out of hundreds that I knew who were non-religious. Many of the men were non-theists.

We're seeing historically massive voter turnouts in Arab Israeli cities — Rahat: 72.2%, Tayibe: 62.7%, Shefa-Amr: 62.3%, Nazareth: 58.4%. A big result for Ra'am and the Joint List could inflict serious damage on Netanyahu's coalition, but also complicate the opposition bloc's govt formation.

The "30%/one third" rule of thumb for housing has always been funny because it a) hasn't been based in any empirical research on affordability b) has been both used as an affordability metric **and a housing market pricing metric**. There's a very good history of this in a Canadian context.
"Percent of income spent on housing" continues to be a sort of silly metric. 1.) It's almost always ~33% 2.) When it's not ~33% it's generally because of a subset of the population is not working (ie, the Florida numbers are because there are retirees without "income")

When people experience nothing but personalist politics, their political imagination atrophies. Israelis vote for the party whose head they want as PM, and don't notice that they have no political apparatus to get things done. So they get despondent and turn inward, away from political engagement.

The 2021 Knesset - the first not to form a government headed by Netanyahu in more than a decade - was toppled because a single MK from Naftali Bennet's party defected to Likud. It's no exaggeration to say that this single, anti-democratic act may have cost thousands of Israeli and Palestinian lives.

A further perversity of the Israeli electoral law is that despite not being personally elected, MKs may choose to leave their party - and even join a different one - without losing their seat. This contributes to instability, with more wrangling over party makeup in the Knesset than outside of it.

This is a good primer on Israel's political situation going into tomorrow's election. But I'd like to go deeper on something he only touches on, which is that part of the reason for Israel's electoral doldrums (and resulting geopolitical chaos) is its broken political system bsky.app/profile/avis...
In about 24 hours, poles will open here in Israel. In what is a strong contender for Israel’s most critical elections. The election pits Netanyahu’s extremely unpopular coalition against a non-coherent, but moderately more liberal, opposition. Here are some thoughts as we head into it.

“The targets are innocent civilians whom no one would classify as combatants,” Netanyahu writes. “Having defined all of society as a field of combat, the terrorist demands that his activity, which would ordinarily be viewed as gangsterism, be treated with the respect given to legitimate warfare.”

"Zionist terrorism goes back much farther than Palestinian terrorism." Author Benjamin Moser tells @mehdirhasan.bsky.social the story of Jacob Israël de Haan, a Jewish critic of Zionism assassinated outside a Jerusalem synagogue in 1924. Watch the full discussion: zeteo.com/p/zionists-a...
"In devising the “War on Terror” framework that the U.S. would go on to pursue, Netanyahu also provided himself a blueprint of terrorism he himself would later follow to a T."
I dug into Netanyahu’s decades-old writings & exclusive meetings with DC elites, and found how far he went to make himself the West's foremost "terror" expert — and thus steer America's endless War on Terror. It's a saga that touches everything from Mario Cuomo & H.W. Bush, to Reagan & Iran-Contra.

We condemn the political threats made by Opposition Leader Jess Wilson on Sunday and reject her misleading connection between protest of Israel’s genocide and the horrific Bondi attack. Protesting a livestreamed genocide is not antisemitic. Our release: www.jewishcouncil.com.au/2026/10/jewi...

Known nuclear armed players in the Middle East are: 1. Israel. At least 90 boosted single-stage nukes, possibly also some thermonuclear. 2. The USA. 100s of nukes, including new miniature 2-stage thermonuclear. 3. Pakistan. About 170 warheads, probably single-stage. MIRV-capable ballistic missiles.

I would honestly like to see a lot more of these stories shared publicly, and I’m ok with holding back my “no shit, you fucking idiot!” reflex response a little bit if it means more of these people changing their minds and changing their votes. I don’t have to be their friends!
I'm quite willing to forgive this from a 27-year-old. Welcome to adulthood! A little late to it but happy you're here regardless.
