This beautiful cartoon by Dave Walker shows what happens when road design takes everyone into account, allowing people to cycle and walk safely and comfortably, while also giving space to those who need to drive 💌 Subscribe to Dave's newsletter: buff.ly/Cbw6mig

My wife says I'm an ageist, but I'm in my 7th decade so I have immunity. Almost every time I walk across Solano Ave, a driver who appears to be least 70 yrs old refuses to yield. A lot of elderly people driving in this neighborhood & it's a hazard. These older people need public transit options!

Workers constantly dig up and relay brick sidewalks and streets in the Netherlands. Water pipe break? Laying fiberoptic cables? The same team opens and closes the and does the work. This team is smoothing out a street that got uneven after 20 years. "It's normal maintenance, just sand below."

Laws in the US against violent behavior are not enforced as long as the perpetrator was behind the wheel of a car?

Wichita police say a 34-year-old woman from Garden City has been released pending the results of a toxicology report and a vehicle inspection. They also identified the 6-year-old boy and 35-year-old man who were killed Saturday afternoon. (@kmuw.bsky.social)

This is f'd up. Richmond, EB Cutting at I-880. Bikes are routed parallel to traffic, beg button is out-of-reach, then you must turn 135˚ to check traffic, then cross to find you are lined up with the sidewalk & must make a VERY tight turn to join the bike lane. I nearly fell into the traffic lane.

At the VERY least, CalTrans should jackhammer out this dangerous section of curb so that a cyclist can safely negotiate their way to the bike lane.

My favorite graphics in "Transportation and the Shape of Cities" #4: A typical office worker has less space in their cubicle than their car does in the parking garage.

So many questions. This "car" can become airborne under its own power, which makes it a Powered-Lift aircraft under federal regulations. Has this thing been certificated under 14 CFR 23, like other light aircraft? Do "drivers" realize they'll need training & a pilot certificate to "fly" it?

The Bay Area faces a funding crisis for its public transit, but a ballot measure could come to the rescue. For @motherjones.com, I reported on the measure and talked with aging and disabled adults, who are more likely to use transit, on what's at stake for them. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

When the Loma Prieta earthquake hit on Tuesday October 17, 1989, BART was put to the test like never before. Not only did service resume just a few hours after the quake, BART ran 24-hours a day, seven days a week for about a month while the bridge was out.

Why submit 360˚ video to Google Street View? GSV is very motor-normative & car-centric. It's only fair that folks who walk & roll be able to see images of paths & bike lanes. Someone needs to do it. Why not me? Here's imagery for Miraflores Park & the "poetically-named" Path 46 in Richmond, CA.

What are new bike lanes around El Cerrito Del Norte BART/San Pablo Ave really like? My Google Street View images for this area are live. Accessing GSV via Google Maps iOS app is often problematic, so best viewed using a desktop/laptop browser. You may need to select the "see latest date" option.

I'm unable to reply to this post, so I'll repost with a comment. Holding a driver's license is a privilege, not a right. Drivers who lack the skill, physical ability, knowledge, or motivation to operate a vehicle in a safe, reasonable, & legal manner are not qualified to hold a driver's license.

Doing 360˚ video for GSV on new San Pablo bike infra in El Cerrito. Feels way safer, but I didn't see any other cyclists. Not a good sign. Some crossings are well thought-out, others are super-inconvenient for bikes & peds. At least one bike sensor didn't work for me on my steel bike.

In several places, the bike lanes abruptly end ... and then a miracle happens? The worst parts, for me, are the bike/ped crossings on the entrance ramps from Cutting Blvd to I-880: The stuff of nightmares. No bike sensing & beg buttons that are out-of-reach for cyclist.

It is still early days and the lanes will probably see more use if/when they extend farther along San Pablo. The environment is generally safer for peds & cyclists, but with drivers running over signs & clipping curbs, the area continues to be predominantly a car sewer.

Keeping bike lanes clean keeps them safe. Debris from cars and landscaping quickly accumulates, creating hazards for riders. If your city isn't sweeping protected lanes as part of standard street maintenance, it is time to demand it.

Going out in a limb here, but low-altitude, high-energy demonstration flights over densely populated areas and sensitive habitats are inherently hazardous. Military pilots accept significant risk in order to protect our country and civilian lives, not to expose us to hazzards where we live.
