70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

I wonder if he has heard of this weird hobby called "building models," where you buy a kit with a zillion parts, spend a long time putting it together, and then display the result. Some people seem to like it, it might catch on. Pardon me, though. I have a Gundam to varnish.

This article in The Atlantic about the grown-up LEGO market struck me as off, written by someone who just can't quite bring themselves to understand why grown-ups would build LEGO sets (and notably didn't seem to talk to anyone to ask). www.theatlantic.com/culture/2026...

there's gonna be a guy who does the sound check for the first livestreamed state execution. they'll probably have someone stand where the guy is gonna be shot to death by the state so that they can make sure the lighting, color, and framing is "correct" when people watch a man die.

The far right loves the U.S. like stalkers “love” their victims. They love an ideal in their heads—in this case, white and 19th century—and want to kill their love interest when they refuse to be that ideal.

We know it's your birthday, you opened your present after breakfast. What do you mean? Of course you opened your present, we all saw it, you got that sweater you're wearing. How could you have had that sweater for years if we all saw you get it this morning, why are you being this way?

I just honestly can't get over that Save Women Sports, an anti-trans group could only find five trans athletes competing K through 12. Five. The NCAA president testified a year and a half ago or so that there were less than 10 college level trans athletes. What the fuck are we doing, people

I am beyond pleased to share that next weekend I will be presenting "1000-Footer," a new work commissioned by Experimental Sound Studio for the 24 channel array at the Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago. The program will be presented on Saturday Sept 12, Sunday Sept 13, and Monday Sept 14, all are free.

And not for nothing, but: I have a full year of GPS data for those boats. The piece for Sonic Pavillion only uses 12 days of it (mapped 1 day to 1 minute). If anyone would like to host an installation version of "1000 Footer" with the full 6+ hour score let me know because I really want to do it.

The score consists of themes for each of the thirteen freighters, and uses GPS data from the boats to move those themes across a map of the Great Lakes projected onto the 24 channel array at the Pritzker Pavilion.

Composing "1000-Footer" has been a great way to have spent my summer, and I'm looking forward to sharing it with everyone. I'll be at the presentations on Sept 12 and Sept 13, say hello if you see me! (For the Sept 14th presentation I'll be in front of my Acoustics & Psychoacoustics class.)

"1000-Footer" is a tribute to the 13 thousand-foot freighters and their crews, the titans of the inland seas who primarily haul iron ore from the Mesabi Iron Range near Duluth to steel mills near Gary and Cleveland. The score incorporates recordings I made onboard one of them, the Mesabi Miner.

The thing about this that really sucks is in many places, 60 dBA is the municipal noise limit. I would bet they spent enough money to get to 59.5 dBA at the property line and not s penny more.

Nothing but respect for Dolly in this 1977 interview. Barbara Walters: “Do you ever feel like you’re a joke and people are laughing at you?” Dolly: “I know they make fun of me. But actually the joke is the public. I know exactly what I’m doing and I can change it anytime.”

Philosophers often bring up the "principle of charity": a willingness to assume good faith in an interlocutor and treat them accordingly. It's good to do in many circumstances. But it is worth formulating a principle of not being a fucking mark. If not during the rise of fascism, then when? 12/

“Culture of impunity” is right. The demand is to never hold public figures accountable for wrongdoing, not even verbally when they’re already beyond the reach of human accountability and won’t hear the criticisms and jokes. The legacy must be sanitized, or current elites might feel less impunity.

"Automobiles represent the dominance of private property over public space" seems like a sentence I should have heard decades ago because now that I have, it just seems incredibly obvious that is what they are.

John Munro@johnmunro.bsky.social

Why are car-centric transport systems so difficult to undo? Because automobiles represent the dominance of private property over public space. In this @urbancyclinginstitute.org essay, I look to history to uncover how we got here. #StealingCars

I truly fucked up not doing my due diligence on Platner before offering high praise for his communication skills. Enough was out there at the time that I should have been more cautious. Especially because I met adventurer dudes like him reporting in Iraq. Deep respect to all who got it right. 1/2

If we want to talk about books that should be reprinted in original covers, this is the favorite I own: 1895 first US edition of "The King In Yellow."

Joe Banks@joebankswriter.bsky.social

Why don't books get re-published in original/classic covers, like albums? I was having a rant with a friend about why John Brunner's excellent and incredibly prescient 1972 novel The Sheep Look Up isn't better known, and he said, 'if I could get it in the original cover, I'd buy it like a shot' 1/2
