Having butterflies show up is surprisingly relaxing. We bought two plants this year just to attract them.

fesshole 🧻@fesshole.bsky.social

Neighbour said my garden wasn't mowed. I said 'Yeah but I get lots of butterflies and you don't'. He's now posting photos of lone butterflies in his garden. Evidently butterfly envy is a thing.

I distinctly remember the moment (many years ago) of having the horrifying realization that a member of the tech press ,whose writing I enjoyed, didn’t understand the basics of the technology they were were reporting on.

"why doesn't this tech journo know about programming languages" unfortunately, my dear brothers in christ, a tech journalist is just a business journalist who knows the hot keys for copy and paste the job is to talk about consumer products, stocks, and mergers not hash tables and sort algorithms

It’s like bank had a high security vault installed but left it open and the front door unlocked after business hours

Molly White@molly.wiki

“The compromised eMudhra keys were defective at a level that’s challenging the imagination of many of the engineers studying the incident. ... ‘That is extremely in the ‘this should not be possible’ category,’ Valdorda said.”

@vcsjones.dev hey sorry to bother, got a .net crypto question. I am using System.Security.Cryptography RandomNumberGemerator class and use GetNonZeroBytes to generate random 32 byte nounce. I have an LLM code scanner saying to use GetBytes because “GetNonZeroBytes exludes 0x00 and biases it”

Is this correct? I did a quick search and didn’t see any any related docs about this and wanted to double check before I start having to fill out the paperwork about rejecting the patch.

The hallmark of the modern reactionary is that they are so immersed in their own bullshit that they don’t understand how facile and corny their understanding of the world is.

The Super AGI: I'm sorry. I disassembled the entire human race molecule by molecule to make paperclips. That's on me. Me: what are you talking about, that's not true Super: you're right. That was a failure of alignment and I'm really sorry Me: you haven't made any paper clips at all have you

“Nobody sat at a computer and said "go hack Hugging Face." But when you design these systems, you're building a pinball machine for words, with different levers interacting to bounce the steel ball of language moving against other levers and mechanisms”

Not nearly as cool as this, but one of the things I did with HyperCard back in the 90’s was a “book report” on the blast radius of a nuclear detonation. And now I feel old 🤣

Alex Wellerstein@wellerstein.bsky.social

OK, NUKEMAP's casualty calculator has been restored. Hooray?

Some scams are easier to spot than others. That said, we get these semi-regularly and they are only getting more focused and custom-tailored, so be careful writers! And, no, we didn’t reply, but it was super-tempting.

Eöl from the Silmarillion. Dark Elf, made cool weapons and armor, married to a elven princess. Actually a controlling a-hole who tried to kill his son with a poisoned spear and ended up killing his wife. Then thrown off a cliff. Ending richly deserved, not a very movie like ending 🤣

What is y'all's holy grail "unfilmable" story? For me, Charles Stross' novella "A Colder War". Depressive CIA agent tries to keep Ollie North from starting Lovecraft infused World War 3? See it in theaters fall 2027 starring Ryan Gosling as CIA man Jourgenson and Casey Affleck as Oliver North.

1: anytime anyone says “we are not ready for a conversation about X” usually means what follows can be safely disregarded as nonsense. 2: I resent that I now know what “Roko's basilisk” is and I want that brain space back.

Stop making fun of AI or it will spitefully deny your insurance claims. They’re calling it the perfect argument.

Pat Casey@patcasey.bsky.social

the Navy should keep the electromagnetic catapults and just add some smoke machines to the carriers to make Trump happy. You can get them used, cheap, off of old hair-metal bands that are retiring from touring

When I was a child, I thought the story of the emperor’s new clothes was a silly story. Now we are living in it….

Kai Ryssdal@kairyssdal.bsky.social

This is, bar none, the stupidest fuckung thing I’ve ever heard. And the idea that there’s nobody in the chain of command - civilian or military - with enough courage to say so is a disgrace.

I was struck by the extent to which this reviewer (and many other people, I'm afraid) have lost sight of the possibility of refusal. And so I want to reaffirm: There is no responsible use without the possibility of refusal. >>

Sure, hand the ai companies another marketing win. It’s not a rogue ai, it’s a lack of willingness or ability to implement a secure sandbox, or even an air gap. It’s laziness but marketing stepped in and rewrote the story.

cnbc.com'AI Kill Switch' bill needs to be passed this year amid ongoing rogue agent hacks, Rep. Lieu saysAnthropic, Meta and OpenAI have all had incidents of AI models hacking other companies during cybersecurity testing.

I swear being able to go through footnotes and links is a freaking superpower in this new AI slop era.

Emily M. Bender@emilymbender.bsky.social

Two links supporting that by the way. The first to a web page on digitalminds dot report and the second to some preprint on arXiv. Always read the footnotes, and all that. >>

Wow this doesn’t seem like to be much of an intellectual take down of “dark enlightenment” you might think… And you would be 💯 correct because the whole concept is devoid of any coherent thought I could take away from the essay. Tyranny sucks no matter what label you put on it.

BadCipherCodes@badciphercodes.bsky.social

3: At the end of LOTR, the hobbits stage an armed rebellion against the ultimate “Dark Elf” Saruman. Life in the Shire sucked under his leadership and the hobbits were all sick of his 💩. Saruman gets knifed in the back by his own lackey. This is the end road of “dark enlightenment”

Finished Curtis Yarvin’s essay on hobbits, high elves and dark elves. 1: WTF is this crap (particularly the section on spouse abuse) 2: he needs to get his head out of his ass. Reality doesn’t work the way he indicates and this essay falls apart badly trying to apply it to the real world.

Like both 1776 and 1863, the tyrants only dimly realize what they've bred or awakened in opposition. Like both 1776 and 1863, the time is ripe for the imperfect people of a very imperfect society to make the Union more perfect and to earn the pride they may feel for this country.

Lots of reasons to be critical of Boeing. Them being able to build a magnificent marvel of engineering known as the 747 is definitely not one of them.

Roger ZenAF 🖕🐸🖕@rogerzenaf.bsky.social

Hey, dumbass: Everett, Washington is the exclusive home of the Boeing 747. Every single 747 ever made, including the 747-8 model gifted by Qatar, was assembled here. So yes, the US can, and DID, build a plane like this - including this one. Nice to see the "president" shit on American Manufacturing

This applies to so many IT domains. If you don’t understand the tradeoffs for the domain, you start making some bombastic statements that sound really silly to anyone who has worked in that space.

TracketPacer@tracketpacer.com

if working in aerospace has taught me anything it’s that any engineer who speaks in absolutes about hardware is full of it

“I wouldn’t let anyone do X if I was running security at that place” Business “well us doing X is keeping this decades old ERP system alive that literally runs this company. We had had 2 failed attempts to get off this system that cost us millions.”

I think this is a key insight about the AI psychosis we are seeing exhibited by big tech CEOs. The further you are away from the work, the more you assume it’s trivial for Claude or ChatGPT to replace the worker.
