Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

This is how a lot of homeowners talk about renters in general. They think renters can’t possibly care about or understand their neighborhood the way that a homeowner does, and therefore only the wishes and concerns of homeowners should be considered.

Tom Nichols@radiofreetom.bsky.social

Well, that's a new one. "College kids should be able to vote to overcome the wishes of the people who actually live in the place where they go to school"

As someone who visits NYC a couple times a year to see friends and family, I cannot pretend to be a disinterested observer here. Hotels in the city have gotten stupid expensive over the past few years and it’s nuts that more of them aren’t coming online.

Stephen Jacob Smith@stephenjacobsmith.com

Here’s an idea for Zohran Mamdani to create more jobs in NYC: he could ask Julie Menin and City Council to relegalize the construction of new hotels, which Bill de Blasio banned citywide as a parting gift to the hotel workers union on his way out of office in 2021 www.nytimes.com/2026/06/02/n...

The thing that makes “gutter racism” an appropriate term for this is that it goes beyond even what segregation’s savviest defenders were willing to say in public 60-70 years ago. They understood that this level of explicit racial animus was embarrassing to the cause.

I feel like I could write an entire Jordan Peterson-style “Rules for Men” type manifesto where the only two rules are “try to be a kind, considerate person” and “figure out your own idiosyncratic tastes instead of wearing a costume someone else assigned to you.“

Learned recently there's a whole subculture of halal BBQ joints in texas, originally because Texas's quite-large Muslim population couldn't eat at ones that also prepared pork, but now it's a whole thriving culinary niche. Real "glorious American melting pot" stuff

Mayor Mamdani's housing plan is live! There's big sweeping YIMBY stuff: -Aggressive TOD upzoning -Major permitting reform -Rescuing & transforming NYCHA They're also looking at finer details, like fixing the FDNY inspections that so often delay CofO issuance (& invite petty corruption)

Stephen Jacob Smith@stephenjacobsmith.com

Mayor Mamdani has announced the Affordable & Efficient Code Reform task force, to convene later this year. The housing plan says that among other things, elevator and plumbing reform will be considered. www.nyc.gov/content/dam/... (pgs. 98-99)

I complain a lot about left NIMBYs. I complain a lot about right NIMBYs. but do you know which NIMBYs actually frustrate me the most? boomer faux-environmentalist NIMBYs like @joannesimonbk52.bsky.social. she’s literally killing homes for over 10,000 people because apartments are scary.

This condescending "Jews who support Mamdani - or even just engage with him - need to be pitied, because they know not what they do" schtick is worse than open hatred. I'd rather be openly despised by these people than pitied for supposedly being too stupid to know what is good for my own community.

Pedophilia is a plank of the Republican Party, a very real policy goal that they work towards on a consistent basis, from the President to the primary electorate. The Republican Party's countless exposed sexual predators simply represent the party's view, which is that children should be molested.

Massie takes the stage after AP called the race for Gallrein. Says he called Gallrein to concede. #ky04

This website’s least favorite senatorial candidate has a big interview in the NYT today and somehow people on here aren’t frothing at the mouth. Are we growing up or have people just not noticed yet?

Having interacted w some of these Third Wayish folks as they tried to co-opt YIMBYism, I cannot even begin to describe how deranged these ppl are about DSA and how that derangement is totally detached from either electoral outcomes or what a given DSA politician actually supports in terms of policy.

Stephen Robinson@playtyperguy.com

I get not wanting far left candidates to win but if the big “stab in the back” narrative for 2016/2024 is that third party voters/couch voters helped Trump win, this would only make the situation worse and with down-ballot repercussions.

“Is Adam Friedland my neighbor or is that just one of what I assume are many guys around here who kinda look like him?” is a question I ask myself weekly as a Brownstone Brooklyn resident.

I used to have the heart of a True Poster but now I think of things that I know would generate a bunch of heat and light and I think to myself "yeah I'd rather just go for a run and not have to wonder who is getting mad at me on the internet"

Interesting study that undermines some widely held impressions (including some of my own) about the behavior of large landlords versus small landlords.

New report from the Family Housing Fund written by @curaumn.bsky.social based on a survey of over 1k tenants living in single-family homes in the Twin Cities. Big takeaway: Large landlords (inclduing private equtiy, and REITs) scored worse across all metrics even after controling for other factors 🧵

The condescending assumption that young Jews voting for Mamdani must not be “educated” sufficiently in Jewish history - as opposed to simply drawing different conclusions from that education - is why they’re losing young people.

We've removed major hurdles to building affordable housing —  a move that will get homes up nearly 2 years faster. We’re in a race to tackle our housing crisis, because working New Yorkers can't afford to wait.

NYC’s new development market is so hot that this narrow ass site next to the Franklin Avenue shuttle that’s been stalled for as long as I can remember is seemingly finally getting built.

Another Midtown South rezoning site just hit the market and it’s so large that it will serve as another good test of whether 485x’s large project construction wage and/or affordability requirements need to be tweaked to make projects viable

The funniest thing about all the anti-Mamdani plutocrats is how they repeatedly undermine their claim of knowing how to best manage the city’s resources by entrusting their own resources to either shambolic idiots and/or consultants taking them for a ride.

“I think that during the period from the middle 1970s through the 2008 financial crisis, we, the professional class made a rather catastrophic error in judgment.”
