With the Paramount merger complete, the Ellisons will get "unprecedented control over what the next generation watches and reads" and the chance to bolster their "lucrative interests in war and surveillance tech," FPF's @seth-stern.bsky.social writes in @theintercept.com:

I wrote a story about menopause in May, when many women were already reporting having trouble obtaining estrogen-replacement patches. Nearly 9 months after the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists acknowledged a shortage, the FDA is too.

Unfortunately, very crappy news today from me, on the McClatchy hedge fund gutting Kentucky's second-largest paper 👇

Kentucky Public Radio@kentuckypublicradio.org

McClatchy laid off 12 journalists at the Lexington Herald-Leader and eliminated a majority of its positions, as a part of its deep, nationwide layoffs. It leaves the second-largest newspaper in Kentucky with just two reporters left to cover city and state government.

Really proud to have had the Texas Observer's cover story earlier this year about why trans inclusion in sport is good, actually.

Texas Observer@texasobserver.org

Once the majority has decided a marginalized group is the demon in one part of a story, it’s easier to paint them as demons in another.  But it doesn't have to be this way. These books offer a humane approach to trans athletes:

I, the only data reporter at the Charlotte Observer, am among the McClatchy layoffs in the bloodbath today. The HR person asked me not to talk about it! AMA. Anyway, here’s a link to one of my most important stories this year. www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/a...

charlotteobserver.comA Black teen found hanged near Charlotte church was a suicide, police say. Questions remainIn May, 16-year-old Juliana Nzita was found dead in a Charlotte churchyard. CMPD called it a suicide. Her family isn’t so sure.

Headstone for Eugene Williams, whose murder was the first in a wave of racialized violence in Chicago in the summer of 1919. 102 years after his death, a group of people determined to see him remembered & honored were successful in getting his grave marked.

It is genuinely bizarre that we’ve become acclimatized to right wingers throwing a tantrum every time a black person (particularly a black woman) is cast in something, but are also supposed to pretend that this is not racism but related to some other substantive concern.

Our two investigations into Madison Square Garden are now unpaywalled and free for anyone to read.

WIRED@wired.com

Yesterday, WIRED learned that Madison Square Garden was suing us for our accurate reporting. We stand by our work. That’s why we’re removing the paywall from two of the MSG stories they don’t want you to read, making them free for everyone.

funny how the cutting edge of the far right is just regurgitated slaveholder agitprop from 1850.

At 8:00 pm it’s still 90, feels like 100.

Hot take: cooling centers should be open MUCH later than 5pm. It's currently 93 degrees at 6:00pm with a heat index of 104 and won't even be under 90 until almost sunset.

Human Rights Watch has released a comprehensive report detailing human rights abuses by the government during this winter’s immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota, which the group alleges also violates international human rights treaties that the U.S. is signed onto.

The "hydration break" really is a perfect American capitalist innovation: a nakedly commercial play to insert more ad revenue into a game that doesn't have ads anywhere else in the world, all under the guise of some humanitarian interest in the players' wellbeing.

Wait ... are bison wildlife or livestock? 🦬 It sounds like a simple question, but it’s not. And the answer is shaping a major fight over conservation, grazing rights and the future of bison restoration in the American West.
