one thing I will say about the preemptive pardon bullshit is it is not the behavior of a group of people who have a definitive plan to retain power forever

Sweeney is seeing things through the lens of "growth". making niche games is sustainable. you can build studio expertise, make games people love, and stably sustain employees. that's humane game dev. i'm sorry Mr. Sweeney and his ilk can't get off on the second order derivative of that.

Watching this industry over the last 15 years has been so painful. The closest thing we have to a universal recipe for making great games is keeping teams together over time, and letting them cook. _Teams_. Of _people_. Seemingly nobody in NA games leadership has ever valued or understood this

Max Nichols@maxnichols.bsky.social

You know what Nintendo does when they have a surplus set of devs from cancellations or production ending? Put them on other projects. The ability to redeploy headcount while keeping teams together over time is like, the main strategic benefit of scale in the game industry

This is our future

Holly Green@winnersusedrugs.bsky.social

There's a certain irony to how the games industry has tried so hard to keep developers from unionizing, but also closed enough studios and laid off enough people that pivoting to worker-owned studios is basically the only option

I feel obliged to once again reiterate that lay offs and closures are not a reaction to the economy, but a failure of leadership. Each wave of closures and layoffs should be looked upon as a consequence of greed and incompetence. If you can't keep your people employed, you are bad at your job.

I don't know what's going on here but I like it

You know you're on the right side of history when you're defending child murder

JUST IN: The police shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley as he sat in his mother’s lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Miss., in June “was justified,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office said on Monday. Her office will not charge the white officer who shot the child.

it’s worth underlining that the amount which a modern live game is not this is directly the result of devs fighting inch by inch, for months if not years, against the guy at every corporation who demands an explanation for why you aren’t doing this at all times

Morgan Johnson@poormojo.bsky.social

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

Talking to adult acquaintances as a kid: there was always a moment when they realized I didn't know anything about sports but was also not academically gifted. These were the only categories of 'child personality' they knew, so they would kind of give up and conversation would get awkward.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

Really love my hair looking like this but it's so hard to get it to stay this way. My hair is so heavy it tends to just fall into my face. Going to try different products and techniques and report back later.

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

Finally played through Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a game I bounced off a couple times over the years. I played a strict no-kill game. I genuinely enjoyed the fantasy of roleplaying an unstoppable cynic who refuses to compromise his principles. The game allows that to be his strength in the story.

Even the primary antagonist, at the very end, admits after some pressure that his reasons for essentially committing genocide are petty and selfish. It's exactly what we would expect from a billionaire.

That said, I didn't like how, at the end, it characterized my choice of broadcasting the truth as essentially agreeing with Darrow's philosophy. Philosophy that he admitted was a lie! It felt like a weird way to cap off a story that I was roleplaying as being about speaking truth to power.

I loved how nearly every corporate or PMC character you meet or read about has some flimsy philosophical justification for the horrors they perpetrate. And then you get point out the obvious flaws in their logic, and then sometimes you even get to hit them in the head afterward! Brilliant.

I'm pretty sure I've said this like a dozen times before but I genuinely believe any senator or congress member who doesn't call for his immediate resignation deserves to go to jail.

As we enter a new quarter, time for an update on games industry layoffs. As you can see here we're well past 50k people known to be impacted since 2020 in over 800 incidents. with 3 months to go, 2026 could end as the worst year on record. 55% of known layoff waves in 2026 have unknown headcounts.

Tech people like this have always had a deep-rooted disdain for artists and musicians. 20 years ago many of my coworkers at Google had no qualms about pirating indie games, and seperately I remember one of them saying (regarding game dev) "if your algorithms are good enough you don't need artists"

I'm incredibly lucky in that I have stability thanks to my success and independence, but that is not the norm. Jobs were already scarce for composers even before everything fell apart. Now it's apocalyptic.

EXCLUSIVE: 2026 is shaping up to become one of the most nefarious years for video game layoffs. I spent the last couple of months asking game music composers a very simple question: how are you holding up? nowplaying.cool/how-indie-ga...

I don't love dunking on folks but it's so fucking funny to me that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies 2 years ago, faced no punishment, and went on to win the presidency a second time and journalists are still like, "hmm, I have an inkling that maybe he believes he's above the law for some reason."

"Anyone who claims to have a relationship with pop culture that doesn't resemble my own is lying for attention" is a very convoluted way of saying "I'm insecure"

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.
