If you look at the thread of people replying to the @aselrod.bsky.social “Lenin is bad” post, many of them are under the impression that Lenin overthrew the czar, when Lenin famously did not travel to Russia until after the czar abdicated

Steven Crabs@blorgu.bsky.social

I think we’re not required to pretend that history respecters who glaze Lenin, Mao, Robert E Lee, Hitler, Pinochet, etc are doing so out of scholarly interest

this is 100% true and it's largely a Keynesian beauty contest of high-engagement politics sickos trying to imagine what will win over the absolute cretins they imagine low-info swing voters to be

Feels to me like we’ve got a subset of folks desperate to find OUR populists, the left Trumps and Rogans, and they’re willing to make… certain sacrifices and compromises to do so. They’ve looked at some of the darker things that follow in populism’s wake and decided some of them, they can live with.

good news everyone, I just saw an infographic saying that a handful of big companies are responsible for most of the world's carbon emissions, so this oil price thing isn't going to affect most of us

I get why people like to dunk on NYT headlines but most of the people replying to this seem literally incapable of parsing what’s being conveyed by the screenshotted text

“high oil prices cause hardship for some Americans but the overall economy remains strong” and “high oil prices cause a recession” are two different scenarios

> Another bizarre angle NE take is emphasizing Douglass’s stated view that the Constitution was an abolitionist document. They’re doing the thing where someone says “America is better than this” and you go “um, actually, America ISN’T better than this”

“Karl Marx had a deep connection to America in his lifetime. Though Marx never visited America, he was a regular correspondent for Horace Greeley’s New York Daily Tribune, which at the time had the largest subscriber base in the world (200,000 in 1855). Marx wrote nearly 500 articles for the paper”

Frederick Douglass argues that slavery violates the principles of the Constitution to: A) Persuade readers that they should oppose slavery. B) Advance his theory of legal interpretation. C) Defend the Founders against abolitionist critics. Coming to a reading comprehension test near you

“saying slurs but leftishly” continues to drive discourse on this app

Sky Marchini@sky.skymarchini.net

you really get the sense on bluesky dot app that some users really do just want to say slurs, but leftishly

They’re telling me a great empire will be destroyed if I attack Persia. Even the oracles who don’t like me very much, very nasty, they all said to me, “Sir, it’s one of the great empires, and it’ll be destroyed. And all because you attacked Persia.” That’s what they’re telling me.

TUCKER: Mr. President, why did you launch this invasion as if Iran posed an imminent threat to America? TRUMP: Tucker, you were a historian, yes? I will take a minute of your time to give you some brief background here. Let us begin with the Rashidun invasion of the Sasanians by Caliph Umar in 542—

The earliest known example of ‘brain rot’ comes from Henry David Thoreau in his 1854 book “Walden.” “While England endeavors to cure the potato-rot, will not any endeavor to cure the brain-rot, which prevails so much more widely and fatally?”

Frankly I’m starting to think we need Pigouvian taxes on video games due to the negative externality of Gamers

Slavery analogy aside, the idea of a progressive tax code is that more tax burden falls on those with the means to pay it. A family with children has less disposable income than a single person with the same income and should be taxed at a lower rate.

I think it’s less that US debt is seen as riskier (default) as there is a strong desire to diversify away from exposure to the US economy and the dollar.

Sky Marchini@sky.skymarchini.net

Normally, in a crisis, US gov’t bond yields fall because they are (were) considered the safest investment possible. Now, yield are suddenly rising. This indicates a couple things, but most critically: Risk premium for US debt surging. Investors view US debt as much more risky than the did a week ago
