Why authoritarians attack universities.

Hungarian PM Péter Magyar: "I have just spoken by phone with the leaders of the Students List, who won the elections in Serbia, to congratulate them... I assured them of Hungary’s support. I was delighted to hear how much strength our victory in April had given them during this difficult struggle."

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

Wow! I did not see that one coming. "Serbia’s strongman leader Vucic concedes defeat to student-led movement in seismic political shift" reports @apnews.com #Serbia

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

Reactionaries argue that centers of conservative thought are needed on college campuses because conservative scholars are excluded from the liberal arts. So the CIF at Iowa picks a distinguished conservative poli sci professor with ties to Duke, Princeton, Nebraska, etc., to lead it.

free of institutional oversight, but fully supported with taxpayer funds on college campuses. They get to have complete independence and self-governance--answerable only to political patrons in state government--while the rest of the university has to sacrifice theirs to create these entities. 2/2

One of the major challenges that newspapers face today is figuring out which party currently controls the entire federal govt and enjoys outsized influence in state legislatures by choice of “the electorate.”

This is the first article of its kind I’ve seen that tries to understand what students are actually doing on their screens instead of just assuming they’re all uninterested in learning and negatively stereotyping them in the process. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/care...

Yale’s Office of Public Affairs banned reporters from Yale’s campus today. It’s corroborated by Francie Diep in her story for the @chronicle.com. This was an attempt to squelch press coverage today of the rally protesting Yale’s attacks on freedom of expression, their pending deal with Trump. 1/

The premise of the JHU-AEI collab on investing in conservative humanities grad students is that there will be jobs for them in the future. This is correct, because right-wing civic center hiring is likely to only expand in the coming years.

In times like these, it’s vital to know who will stand up for democracy and justice and who will cower and capitulate. Students, faculty, alumni and staff are on the right side of history. The Yale president and trustees are collaborators and their names will live in infamy.

Tremendous turnout and energy at the Democratize Yale protest on Friday! Huge high five to hundreds of students, faculty, workers, and alums who are fighting for academic freedom and freedom of speech while telling President McInnis and the trustees NOT TO CUT A DEAL WITH TRUMP!

It's worth remembering (esp. re: Cornell): when a network of pundits + think tank reps chose to deride "safe spaces" on college campuses, they by default derided the idea that universities should better protect vulnerable student groups from assaults + fully investigate their credible reports. 1/2

Those pundits and partisan operatives didn't have the courage of their convictions or the data to say so explicitly. So they invented the conceit of the pathologically "coddled" undergraduate student instead. 2/2
