Canadian Chemist Crystallographer...dammit, there isn't a word that starts with C to say I play TTRPGs, is there? Anyway, not a geek in a can, despite the name. Am a geek though. they/she

In 1966, Bill Mason released his acclaimed live-action short film Paddle to the Sea with the National Film Board. The Oscar-nominated film became a fixture for Canadian children in schools for decades. This is the story of that film. 📸 NFB 🧵1/10

one of my more crank policy ideas: you should not be able to get a liquor license without some degree of transit accessibility. however, if you and a few other applicants in a walkable area (like 2 or 3) otherwise qualify for one, you should be able to sue to get a stop near you.

Today sucks. My uncle-in-law passed (not unexpected, he has been ill for a few weeks), and I'm sick from Covid/flu shot side effects and keep falling asleep to minecraft videos and having strange incoherent dreams.

Im deeply confused. They claim discovery of crystal structures but dont actually make crystals or show they exist? Like...wtf? You dont have a crystal if you dont have a crystal. We predict shit all day everyday, but I dont claim it is real and publish in Science without way more evidence.

I am so excited to welcome the Magic the Gathering team and the D&D team in stepping up to unionize alongside us! ^_^ My coworkers across WOTC are amazing and I'm so happy that we will all have a voice in shaping the policies affecting our teams!

This morning, the D&D team and Magic's Studio X informed our leadership of our intent to unionize. We love the games we make and the work we do, and unionizing is how we protect that work. unitedwizardsofthecoast.com/news/dnd-stu...

Hello, esteemed mr Tingle... I'd like to inquire, by nature of the times we live in, whether you use AI at all for your covers these days.

FUCK my city needs to get a safe injection site. Called 911 for a couple people who'd passed out in front of the grocery store today, they woke up about the time the ambulance got there. Would LOVE for that to be a paid professional who knows what to do and won't overreact's job

(Funnily enough, Traveller's 1977 text also directly frames many activities that modern RPGs characterise as "GM prep", such as designing NPCs and locations, as forms of solo play – a stance that, if you're been following this blog for any length of time, you may recognise as one I happen to share!)

Canageek reposted

Taken from "Traveller, Book 1: Characters and Combat" (1977). It's strange to see folks insisting solo RPGs are a post-Forge phenomenon when there's a really obvious example of a game nearly as old as the medium that both acknowledges the practice and provides frameworks explicitly designed for it.

Every day I'm confronted with the reality that a large portion of this hobby's participants looked at that "player showing up to a game of 'Vampire: the Masquerade' with a half-elf druid" anecdote that did the rounds recently and genuinely thought the GM was the bad guy for rejecting that character.

Canageek reposted

Eventually we're going to have to acknowledge the fact that we're not going to be able to constructively address the GM burnout problem as long as our definition of "bad GMing" includes "having any preferences whatsoever about what kind of game they want to run".

How did it come down to the two WORST minerals? Quartz: Scratches my sample holders up, shows up like stink in mineral samples making it hard to see the other phases Graphite: SUPER slippery, slides out of the sample holder and contaminates other samples, pain to clean up #MineralCup #PXRD

I was talking about student issues with uploading PDFs with a TA, and they blamed covid but I said I see similar issues with my mother using tech — file extensions are hidden by default, file names themselves are sometimes obscured... how are people to know what type of file they are dealing with?

Canageek reposted

I think a big problem with computer tech is that, in the name of making everything more "user friendly", they have made it difficult or impossible for you, the user, to understand what is happening

End of an era. One of the most iconic locations for US birders is a small picnic table in Patagonia, Arizona, the namesake for one of my favorite birding terms, the Patagonia Picnic Table Effect (see this excerpt from my birding dictionary). I went there last week and found the table had collapsed.

Might miss the Drumheller excursion: The massive, uncontrolled wildfires on Okanagan Lake are causing a lot of flight cancellations due to visibility and disrupting flight paths. #IUCr2026

Should have taken the bus- Would have been cheaper and only about twice as long. Not used to it being an option. Will see about getting one if my flight tonight is cancelled.

For those that don't know, in the last few weeks there have been FOUR major wildfires on Okanagan Lake: One was contained pretty quickly (and is now out). One is contained, and the other three are burning out of control, causing well over 20,000 combined evacuations. #IUCR2026
