This seems to me to get it exactly right and obviously applies beyond mathematics: solving a problem is not the same as developing conceptual understanding and insight, and might even come at the expense of it.

A group of 25 Fields Medalists, including myself, have made a joint declaration on Math and AI: mathandai.org . We welcome additional signatories. See also this article in the Economist announcing the declaration: www.economist.com/science-and-...

The political risk of regulatory capture by the AI inustry is really compounding with the risk of user-lock-in. The big players' ideal scenario would be that AI is indispensable in life and workflows (after eroding human education and training) and regulated as to become an uncompetitive market.

This post is unavailable.

Once that is achieved, prices go up and quality decreases, leaving huge profits and making life harder for everyone with little to do about it as it's hard to retrain the skills we have lost on the way.

(obv, this is the *big players* ideal scenario and is something that can be avoided through political mobilization in favor of regulation for the social good that make societies less vulnerable to such a dependency)

I just finished a book. The goal is to better understand how foreign aid affects elections and democratic accountability -- something I've been thinking about for a long time now. The book is free to read at cup.org/3U9VVxO.

cup.orgDependency PoliticsCambridge Core - International Economics - Dependency Politics

Dependency Politics by Ryan Jablonski Examines how democracy works in aid-dependent countries, challenging conventional wisdom on how aid affects elections and public policy. 📚 https://cup.org/4pTmqDu

*not-so-fun fact There is still no authoritative translation of the Ethiopian bible, more than 500 years after the outside world learned about it So it will be long before we get any translations of the hundreds of thousands of African manuscripts discovered in the last 30 yrs

I had never thought about it either. Also, it’s worth remembering that you can, in fact, dramatically improve the world by thinking of a simple thing that would make a difference and becoming obsessed with it. 🤗

It seems a good day to remind people that in the UK 3 times as many people work in Indian restaurants or for McDonalds as in the whole coal and steel industry. 5 times as many are academic staff at universities. If Labour does not understand its electorate, there is no way to appeal to it.

Surprising: frontier models (Claude, ChatGPT, Deepseek V4) produce the most predictable text of any local AI model or human text I've ever tested. Not surprising: Finnegans Wake is off the charts, by far least predictable—Shannon & Lydia Liu proved right—and Hemingway the most predictable human.

Ryan Heuser@ryanheuser.com

Shannon measured the information rate of English at ~1 bit per character. According to a byte-level LLM measuring next-character predictability in LLM & human text (diaries, abstracts, dreams, fiction), aligned models produce sub-English information rates & LLM text is more predictable than humans'.

Universities run on what we might call "integrity tasks"—little pieces of work that are expected to be done honestly, by a person, but with minimal policing and oversight.

I present new data on colonial ethnic and administrative geography. Results from a spatial partition model suggest that indirect British rule more strongly aligned administrative units with ethnic geography while direct French led to substantively more administrative dismemberment of ethnic groups.

In the bigger picture, this paper contributes further evidence on how political units and ethnic groups shape each other, a process that I have documented at the subnational levels in Africa South of the Sahara and at the national level in Europe.

I argue that ruler who want to centralize power will design units that disrupt ethnic groups and their institutions through "dismemberment" (cut by borders) or "suffocation" (diverse units). In turn, indirect rule through preexisting institutitions requires ethnically aligned administrative units.

Thrilled to see Making a Career in Dictatorship featured in The New York Times @nytimes.com My favorite line: “[The book] reads like what you might get if you crossed Hannah Arendt’s ideas about the ‘banality of evil’ with a business school guide on how to get the most out of low performers.”
