Want to understand why journalists and politicians get so excited about AI doomsday predictions but mostly ignore climate change? It's called *information pollution.* Thank you to @amywestervelt.bsky.social for coining this important new term and writing a book about it, and explaining it to me!

climatecoloredgoggles.comArtificial insanityA conversation with investigative journalist Amy Westervelt that is NOT about AI killing us all.

NEW for @carbonbrief.org As El Niño intensifies, the forest fires ripping through Indonesia are on track to reach levels not seen since 2015. The country's 2015 fire season has been linked to 100,000 premature deaths and produced emissions on a par with the EU's fossil-fuel emissions that year.

Experts told me the extent of this year's fires in Indonesia will depend in part on how long the El Niño lasts Fires tend to spike in the country during El Niño years - when drought dries out the landscape. Scientists expect it the current El Niño event to be one of the most intense on record.

Peatland restoration efforts in Indonesia in recent years have been credited with reducing the number of fires during the 2019 El Niño. Experts say it remains to seen what their impact will be this time around, as the world faces a "super El Niño" Read more > www.carbonbrief.org/el-nino-indo...

I had the exciting opportunity to write a guest post for @carbonbrief.org about our new paper on the expansion of extreme heat seasons around the world. Take a read for a digestible summary of our approach and key results!

NEW - We looked at what can, and can't, be said about climate change and the 2026 Himalayan floods Attribution is difficult, but rising temps, permafrost thaw and glacier melt may have all contributed to the disaster Feat. insights @iceybethan.bsky.social & Jakob Steiner shorturl.at/J66h

2026 is on track to be the warmest (~35% chance) or second warmest (~63%) year on record, while 2027 is very likely (92% chance) to be the warmest on record on the back of a growing super El Niño event. For more, check out my new Carbon Brief State of the Climate Q2 update: www.carbonbrief.org/...

NEW I looked at the different ways heat-related deaths have been reported by governments and scientists during the recent heatwaves in May and June for @carbonbrief.org . Broadly speaking, there are two approaches — each with pros and cons. For more, see: www.carbonbrief.org/qa-europes-m...

Everybody in the "climate space" (which means everyone on earth...) needs to understand these mind-blowing figures. Google's "total electricity consumption jumped from 31 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2024 to 43 TWh in 2025." In ONE year. The AI corporate arms race is eating the world.

KetAnthropic JoshAI@ketanjoshi.co

NEW BLOG FOR YOU Google's energy consumption numbers in their new climate report are mind-blowing. 2 years ago they flipped from linear to exponential growth, and their climate impact is blowing out, too. A WILD testament to the obscene bloat and waste of GenAI: ketanjoshi.co/2026/07/01/g...

Blatant lobbying, not for the sake of our country, but for the fossil fuel industry, in which almost all the ultrarich - including, in all likelihood, the proprietors of these newspapers - are heavily invested. The attacks on Ed Miliband, the one truly successful person running a department under Starmer, shows that the lack of seriousness in British politics goes way beyond No.10 to the press, the trade unions, the business sector.

Blair may not think he's a "climate denier" but he is essentially reading from a list of climate denier talking points to make his case for abandoning net-zero.

James Murray@james-bg.bsky.social

This is such a weak, imprecise, and shabby argument from Blair.

Wes Streeting is far from being the only politician who is guilty of this, but it is always weird to me how you can write a paragraph on the challenges the world faces and not mention climate change.
