NEW BLOG FOR YOU Google's energy consumption numbers in their new climate report are mind-blowing. 2 years ago they flipped from linear to exponential growth, and their climate impact is blowing out, too. A WILD testament to the obscene bloat and waste of GenAI: ketanjoshi.co/2026/07/01/g...

All the eco indicators had gone exponential before this shit even started. and the result will just be a more oppressed population with all the margins going to the owners. none of their wet dreams will be realized, just your oppression. The ecosphere is toast.

Their core product is our eyeballs, sold to advertisers. But I agree about search. And I suppose our eyeballs do tend to degrade over time, as well…

So why have search results gotten less reliable? It’s interesting that this long run of cheap hardware has lead to mountains of code bloat and software inefficiency, and the “only” solution seems to be firing programmers and building data centers.

Enshittification. If you own 90% of the market, you cannot get more people to search. But you /can/ make search results worse so people will make more searches to reach the answer they want. This is what Google has been doing for a while now to get more revenue.

The gains in efficiency from shrinking silicon have really slowed down for awhile now, and what tech companies are doing instead is just pushing more energy through the chips to get that extra performance, this is part of why energy usage continue to explode, real efficiency has long been abandoned.

Can you do some reporting how frequently all hardware inside these behemoth data centers is being replaced? AFAIK high performance computing hardware doesn't last long. A couple years and it's out.

“There will be no problem in taking all the electricity and water for data centres once we kill all the humans with catastrophic climate change oh wait oops no customers or revenue oops”

that’s right i switched to DuckDuckGo now, no more automatic AI running with every simple search. AI forced use is a crime against society and a crime against the planet. Tech overlords are out of control with this garbage

even if you don’t change the settings, it only applies AI to certain searches, not all of them, and I do appreciate that it’s a lot easier to limit it further compared to other browsers.

Yes I believe so and they are pushing their supply chain to 100% renewables too…I don’t have the latest environment report but will check tomorrow

So the 2026 Environment report shows Apple facilities energy consumption at 3.73 TWh. (page 80). The report shows Supply Chain Renewable use of 38.3 TWh - but doesn't show what % of total energy used that is. Apple have a 2030 target for 100% renewable energy in the supply chain.

Yeah - the charts above are direct electricity consumption only - I *wish* these companies disclosed a lot more detail about scope 3 electricity use. Apple in particular are a little sneaky with their supply chain renewable claims, but haven't had time to write about it much

I'm not defending this, but New Zealand and Morocco are... more grazing livestock (photosynthetic energy) than industrial might. And though Nigeria is a petroleum exporter, see previous sentence. The real question is will AI and the tech companies solve this self-defeating energy use problem.

This is what the world is building instead of houses So that they can fuck everybody's jobs It's not like the world is lacking people And once your job is done "kill all the homeless" remember

"But if we don't beat up Mother Nature, go through her pockets for cash and other valuables, and dump her unconscious body in a random alley, our competitors might, and this could hurt our profits! OUR PROFITS!! PROFITS ARE AT STAKE!!!"

This is why I try very hard not to use AI. However, google have made it impossible to disable AI on the millions of searches etc that people do daily, so we are all contributing to this whether we chose to or not.

When data centres plug into the grid, power generation has to increase. That often comes from coal and gas - and so, Google's reported grid emissions are accelerating too The pollution pumped out here causes stuff like heatwaves that kill thousands of people. This is unsafe and v v v dangerous

They think it’s a temporary bump and the AGI will tell them how to fix the climate crisis NEXT week. When the AGI comes (lol) it’ll just say “there’s decades of advice on how to save the planet but instead of doing that you built me, now it’s too late.”

Google basically say: it's all worth it. But is it? Google now has to burn 1.5x as much energy to make the same $1m in revenue. Compared to 2021, are you getting 2x the value out of Google's services, to justify 2x the climate disasters they'll cause? Is this a good trade-off, to you?

As people become less hysterical there will start to be more sober assessments of how much benefit AI will bring (some, very definitely, but less than promised) versus social cost in water, electricity etc (a LOT more than people have been willing to recognise so far). Not before time.

Decentralization is not just an ecological alternative; but the only thermodynamically stable survival strategy for highly complex cognitive systems. You don’t build a gigantic, vulnerable brain that requires its a coal-fired power plant when you can instead create an decentralized sun powered mesh
