Ridiculous to mention Manny Rutinel in the same breath as most of the other names here, though I'm sure the progressive left would be more than happy to bet its "future" on the outcome in a tossup district in a D+10 environment.

nytimes.comThe 11 Midterm Races That Could Shape the Progressive Movement’s FutureThe left says its populist message can attract moderates and conservatives in addition to liberals. That theory will be put to the test in a series of competitive races on Election Day.

Every time I look at data like this I'm baffled all over again by the extreme Democratic underinvestment in CD3 relative to CD5. If anything can explain spending 5X the money to flip a district that after all that $$ is *still* twice as R-leaning as CD3 was four years ago, I have yet to hear it.

Certainly no signs of any kind of shock Democratic underperformance in early Colorado ballot return data, which show 25 of the state's 28 largest counties shifting towards Dems compared to the same point ahead of the 2022 midterms.

Looking at the two-party split like this can't tell us anything about persuasion, either among affiliated voters or (especially) unaffiliateds, who now make up over half of all voters in the state, so don't read too much into the specific numbers.

Hard to get too worked up about this snooze of a segment but quoting a denial from the administration attributing the retaliation to "independent agency decisions" without noting (or even being aware of?) the smoking-gun email disproving that lie is just incredibly sloppy work.

The Brazil election story today is already wild. Alleged efforts by some local mayors to stymie public transportation to suppress votes. Extended voting hours. Now vote is coming in, Bolsonaro with a slim lead, and yet the Polymarket has totally flipped in the last few hours towards Lula:

Thought it was pretty funny when they broke the Collins story and every regular person who read it was like "oh my god what a bombshell" and every lawmaker of either party who was asked about it on the Hill was like "uhh it's, well, the thing is, sorry I have to take this call"

ProPublica@propublica.org

In 2020, Lindsey Graham had a secret dinner with executives at the defense firm Navatek. Graham agreed to steer a $10 million contract their way. In exchange, the firm’s CEO, Martin Kao, pledged thousands for Graham’s campaign coffers, Kao later told the FBI.

Sorry, yeah, it's a big diverse rural district where campaigning is harder than firing the TV ad money cannon and candidate recruitment is harder than finding the first turnkey party insider with a Contacts app full of max donors. Real political parties compete in those kinds of districts too.

I think we all know what it means, but I can't get over the idea that Castle Rock in the year 2026 has "small-town character." Criss-crossing my suburban megaplex on six-lane arterials between various big-box parking lots all day and convincing myself I'm the house-call doctor in Winesburg Ohio

Not just the fastest, or the cheapest, or the best, but the *only* possible solution to climate change is a rapid global buildout of clean energy infrastructure. If you're standing in the way of that, you're not working on climate change & should be honest with yourself about your priorities.

It's incredible to me that Evans has been able to go 15+ months giving the same non-answer to any immigration question that he did before I reported he'd misrepresented his grandfather's story for years. But that's what's possible when you only talk to journalists who won't ask those questions.

Second, and probably more importantly, as a substantive public policy issue: Why does he believe immigrants today should be treated differently than his grandfather's generation was, despite the overwhelming similarity between the two in both personal circumstances and broader social context?

coloradonewsline.comA century later, Rep. Gabe Evans echoes anti-immigrant attitudes his grandfather’s family overcame | Colorado NewslineMany of Rep. Gabe Evans’ statements in support of Trump's immigration policies distinctly echo the anti-immigrant rhetoric of the 1930s.

I put a lot of work into that story, so obviously I think those questions are pretty important and Evans' refusal to even attempt to answer them is glaring. Luckily for him, that view isn't universal, I guess.

There are two overarching questions that Evans has never even come close to answering since we published this story. First, as a matter of basic accountability: What did he know, when? Was this info new to him or was he lying to voters when he repeatedly said his grandfather immigrated legally?

coloradonewsline.comU.S. Rep. Gabe Evans misrepresented family’s immigration history | Colorado NewslineU.S. Rep. Gabe Evans of Colorado has mischaracterized the story of how his Depression-era ancestors immigrated to America.

From a campaign that's typically very disciplined and has projected confidence up to this point, this is a very "internals looking dire" post from Gabe Evans, imo. Two weeks out and you're pivoting from "he's a soft-on-crime vegan socialist" to "he's a corporatist Palantir stooge"?

Part of the answer to "how did we get here?" is that many major journalists—since 1998, Crawford has covered SCOTUS for PBS, ABC, and CBS—are lying bigots. Here Crawford is praising a guy who asked a dumb racist question, glitched out when asked why, then admitted he wanted a Christian theocracy.

There'll be plenty of other differences between a Weiser administration and the current one, but I think it continues to be quite underrated that one of the clearest policy/governance changes he's promised is to be *more* solicitous of the views of these people than *Jared Polis* has been.

Absolutely beyond parody.

"Listening" to concerns, having people "at the table," etc. is the way Weiser talks about this stuff now. But it's a lot easier to paper over some of these tensions in a campaign context than it is when the rubber is actually meeting the road in policymaking.

*But* I do think that supermajority numbers of D legislators broadly raises the likelihood of plain old 50+1 majorities for more progressive legislation, committee votes, etc., without those same ~10 moderates being a check for the business lobby. And *that* does make some Dems uncomfortable.

Phil Weiser has said clearly that he thinks one-party rule by *his* party has been bad for Colorado. Similar to many prominent national Democrats saying they want a "strong Repbublican Party." I think these are sincere beliefs, not just rhetoric.

Fwiw I think the value of a supermajority is sort of overblown when 5 or 10 or 15 of those votes are going to be suburban moderates who aren't going to override a veto or put major progressive constitutional amendments on the ballot anyway.

One thing cutting against expectations this election cycle: for all the talk of Dark-Money Ballotdammerung, 2026 is on pace to be Colorado's least expensive cycle for total spending by issue committees in at least a decade.

"Brighter Colorado," the main vehicle for dark-money group Advance Colorado's issue spending this year, has reported just $2.6 million raised as they try to pass six different ballot measures and oppose two others. Really don't know what to make of that.

And so Hickenlooper and the party establishment, with a regrettable assist from the media, simply did everything they could to avoid debates, sit-down interviews and other public forums in which he might have expressed that belief to voters while running a close Democratic primary this year.
