Ending the triple lock is one of the biggest gambles of Andy Burnham's career - but since then there's been barely a peep about it
In fact, the only MP to mention it at PMQs was... Andy Burnham
Why is his gamble proving so much less disastrous than the winter fuel cuts?
My Substack post:
the actual reason is that the media likes Trump and wants to help him. They didn't like Hillary and they didn't like Biden and wanted to hurt them. That explains why Hillary's emails was covered as a nuclear-level scandal and "Trump is a violent rapist who is best friends with Jeff Epstein" isn't
And... it's election day in Israel. Here is your reminder that if the Jewish politicians opposing Netanyahu were willing to work together with their Arab peers we wouldn't be wondering whether or not Netanyahu can be beaten. It would be clear that he could

New Scottish Government stats show an 8% drop in new homes added to Scotland’s housing stock - the lowest level in a decade.
Scotland needs to build itself out of the #HousingEmergency, with at least 15,693 social homes needed each year.
Help us make that happen

In fact I will say the Earnest and Pious Charismatic Ethnic Minority political figure (AOC, Mamdani, El-Sayed) has been a pretty good bet for the American left so far, whereas the Disaffected Gruff White Guy Showcasing True Masculinity (Fetterman, Platner) has been a worse bet. Just an observation.
Yeah start insinuating he has morning chai rather than coffee, say that he knocks things for 6 rather than hits a home run, allege that he is generally a clean living good boy who loves his mother and prays every Friday (pejorative).
“Alongside fellow MPs, I have received reports of applications being refused because of convictions linked to the 2019-2020 pro-democracy protests”, writes @bobbywdean.bsky.social

The latest polling shows almost half of Scots think there should be another independence referendum in the next five years 👀

The kneecapping of the BBC
Is a horrific exercise in avoiding to pay for anything and hoping “efficiency savings” are enough to get by.
Just fucking fund the BBC properly.
A longer read on BBC cuts:
-BBC not halfway to £500m goal
-More radical savings required
-BBC Sounds under threat?
-Bosses mulled axing CBBC
-1,200 of 2k layoffs confirmed
-Industrial action threat lingers
-Concern at charter talks urgency

The correct legal approach to this seems to be that when platforms start favouring some content over other, they don‘t deserve immunity for third party content on the basis that they are just platforms. They should become liable. finance.yahoo.com/media-advert...
Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff
Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.
Times have been tough in this Ohio town ever since the woke mob closed the old Cheesecake Factory. So when Vivek Ramaswamy promised to legalize child rape, they finally had something to cheer about again. But then Obama said something elitist.
If I'd loudly, and at length, bemoaned the fact that Muhammad being a popular name in Ireland was a sign of creeping Sharia law, I think it would come up.
With Linehan it doesn't.
Because frothing transphobia is not merely excused. It's worse. If you hate trans people enough, all else is forgiven
This is not a "you didn't KNOW?" post because I truly envy and respect anyone unaware of Linehan's output BUT he's been EXTREMELY racist for years now. Attacking black actors on his wife's show Motherland as diversity hires; podcast screeds about muslims in Ireland; delighting in Palestinian deaths.
The backpacks John Swinney said every P1 pupil will receive are to be made in China and Scottish factories say they cannot compete with its low-wage economy
Again, worth analysing Burnham as if he is really good at politics: moving red lines from things EU can't accept (free movement) to things it might (euro). Changing terms of debate on an issue from negative (uncontrolled immigration) to positive (Brits can go abroad for work).
I think @andyburnham.bsky.social wants to rejoin the EU. Not spin. It's incredibly bold to even raise free movement. Perhaps testing the water to see if public opinion on immigration has changed. The Europeans are paying attention
Don't want to get too sucked in to election chat (the devil makes work for idle Blueskyers) but if the point of an election is to secure a looser tax policy mandate, then you can be sure tax rises will become a central focus of an election campaign.
and you don't want that amid high inflation
at present you're liable to have lower inflation by 2029, together with a post-MAGA US government. maybe economic growth will solidify and employment will return, maybe it won't.
but the economic fundamentals are likely to be better in 2029 than in 2027
the fact is that, yes, broad based tax rises *do* mean people have less post-tax disposable income - duh - and so making that, or allowing that, to be central in an election campaign at a time of squeezed incomes is... bold.
Oh dear. We don't have enough trained therapists (post-doc level) and effective treatments for many people take years to be effective (with at least 1 session per week). We'll also need to increase the number of in-patient beds in MH units. It's never just about prescribing drugs.
“Healey should remove anxiety and depression as a reason to claim benefits and offer people treatment instead. It would be better for the individuals and a fraction of the cost.”

This story went up late on Friday and got less attention than it otherwise might have done. A sentencing hearing on Friday was told three participants in the Tory election-betting scandal - dismissed at the time as "a flutter" - would have made nearly £50,000 if undetected www.ft.com/content/510e...
