becoming a sovereign citizen type except instead of their beliefs I simply think the Macbeth principal should be applied to the US Constitution; that is to say, the framers when they said "natural born citizen" were actually saying "not delivered by c-section"

Unsure how well this would work with my mom - slipped irrevocably down the anti- vaccine slide in 2020 and hasn't looked back, never even wondering why one kid doesn't talk to her and the other (me) barely does 🤷‍♂️ - around 2023 she stated skepticism of pet vaccines and the incandescent rage, isfg

Shepherd@neolithicsheep.bsky.social

If you have a rabies vaccine skeptic in your life, you should sit them down and show them videos of rabid animals. Start with wildlife and end with humans dying of rabies. Do it every day until they get a restraining order or vaccinate their pets

FWIW, pretty sure it would mean stupid shouting and tight lipped unwillingness to engage and then just reverting to the original position while failing to even try to comprehend why everyone else is pissed.

Oh well c'est la vie, you follow the advice of craven internet strangers over your children you get the bed you lie in as a parent in my book 🤷‍♂️

Gotta admit that Claude is an absolute wonder for reviewing technical documentation - specifically in my case construction plan drawings to make sense of my company's scope and assist with the takeoff process and clarify scopes

Notably, I checked a colleague's numbers and such from ChatGPT and was fairly unhappy with the results - but also this could be a factor of careful steering. Scope extraction with plans and scope -> takeoff -> artifact for review has been my standard and this seems to keep it on rails better

Much of the info still has to be validated, but the possibilities are wild. It's become pretty clear that a small firm could fill a lot of deficiency gaps very well with careful deployment of some of these tools

I don't think this was feasible 1 year ago - and maybe that's true even 6 months ago - but rn gd does it help and speed up a lot of the process and allows for a more complete review than I could hope to do otherwise.

This is so tiresome, man. What big standard advice my family has followed as long as I remember and I grew up in an incredibly conservative family. Istfg this dogshit decade+ has turned the dumbest shit into partisan mudslinging affairs

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

But that’s not at all inconsistent with anything I’m saying. The claim isn’t “listen to radio, go Nazi.” It’s that new forms of media change the dynamics of politics, which can make outcomes that were previously unlikely - like the rise of various extremisms - more plausible or even probable.

currently reading a whole bunch of petitions and editorials from black americans of the revolutionary era and it is so striking (and frankly inspiring) to see how the ink wasn't even dry on the declaration before black americans were demanding that the patriots live up to their stated ideals

funny to think about a far future where anthropic is a large, mature, boring public company and its founders' belief in the imminent machine god is a bit of funny trivia like wk kellogg believing bran stopped masturbation

When Park Chung Hee realized he'd lose the next election, he told his prime minister that he was considering something 'special'. A year later, he abolished democratic elections and crowned himself as leader-for-life. Yesterday, Trump said that there shouldn't even be a midterm election.

Almost every problem we are dealing with right now can be traced directly back to this fucker right here. People want to talk about the confederates were never appropriately punished for the Civil War but bc this man was likable, America has never really even acknowledged the harm he caused.

Every so often the admins of any site get pulled into ongoing site conflicts and end up radicalizing themselves against their own users. Jack Dorsey's true innovation was going off to a yoga retreat to do peyote about it for two weeks

well you see, in "he said, she said" journalism, it's important to bury the truth halfway down the page in a quote by an activist or academic (if you mention it at all) as easily-dismissible opinion, otherwise Republicans will get mad and insist you aren't being fair and balanced

not sure how to square ‘no one person can be reasonably expected to pay for every media subscription’ with ‘sorely underpaid writers need to make a living’ but my inclination is not to locate that problem with any of the broke ass people on either end of the complaint

Pure Land Luddite reposted

The answer is ads. It’s always been ads. Commercials are what pay for media because consumers won’t do it willingly, and we’ve had a nearly two decades long experiment with streaming services to prove it You know what all the streaming services are doing now? Putting in ads.

Computers were a skill. They were taught in classrooms as a skill. Skills give you power over your tools because you work them as an expert and that is leverage to multiply externally. And then computers became an A/B tested telemetry-based advertising conduit to brains for SaaS recurring revenue.

This "golly, let's not let politics get in the way of friendship" pap that we hear from a lot of Trumpistas is basically a kind of gaslighting, as though burning down the constitutional order & kidnapping people to ship to gulags were just another ordinary policy disagreement.

Rob Tracinski@tracinski.bsky.social

One of the many contradictions of Trumpism is that the whole appeal of Trump is that he is waging TOTAL WAR on every other part of society. But then it's totally unfair if anyone else wants to fight back.

Relatedly, playing through the insomniac Spider-Man games I was struck by how much the meta-story really reflects some of the most reactionary paranoias about the state of the world

Reconstructionist@unavaleable.bsky.social

Lowkey hate games resorting to non state actors as military antagonists as if the state wasn't mostly developed as the best method of marshaling martial power

Like paramilitary force mustering so much force that you'd almost *need* superheroes to do anything about it Levels of street crime that makes you go 'yeah, alright - I guess' to a lot of the response And they're very good games tbc. Just couldn't escape this on some level while playing them

This is the true final destination of a public and media that is completely and utterly incapable of knowing much less understanding things about the way the world works. It’s basically kabuki theatre as government. People say things and posture for the camera and it’s “governance”.

I find “people don’t actually know how things work” has a lot of explanatory power. I don’t mean this in a holier-than-thou way. I’m only vaguely aware of how my microwave or the car radio work. A lot of modern life is assuming the functioning of complex tech and models.

Protests aren’t the only tool in the anti-authoritarian toolkit, but they’re incredibly important. Protests help us see each other; they make it feel safer to refuse to obey the dictator, and make it more possible for us to organize mass non-cooperation. It’s an essential step in the process.
