My son: I got lots of people to sign up for swim team! Also my son: I hate practice, there are too many people! (Classic sowing/reaping, also he can just go to his club practices 4 days a week)

Van de Ven, had he been a fraction higher with that nasty foul on Caicedo, would have been thrown out. Certainly worth more of a look than Palmer's foul.

It was the end of year marching band performance for the parents last night (and our last), and it was a delight to see the whole band dancing around and posing as they played Pink Pony Club. Just pure joy on their faces.

Escape from New York, the glider scene. It's '81, a year before Tron revolutionised CG and Carpenter has 1/3 of Tron's budget...so how did he pull off an absurdly sophisticated wireframe simulation?! It's actually a cardboard city painted matte black, lined with reflective tape and lit with UV.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

Fucking with polling in Ohio by being a middle aged white male with a graduate degree marking myself as 'independent' rather than 'liberal' because they don't have eco-anarchist or socialist options.

I interviewed 83-year editor & sound designer Walter Murch, a legendary figure. The Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, Ghost, The Unbearable Lightness of Being...and The English Patient, which turns 30 this year. Info on a free zoom talk included. www.rogerebert.com/interviews/t...

I had forgotten that DAI has the anti-homeless / anti-human standing benches. The airport is in the middle of nowhere. All they're doing is further pissing off people who've had a crap time travelling.

I've got to finish up a bunch of training ('learnings' is going to turn me into a very angry prescriptivist) and it's all video & audio of text slide content and I want to find someone and shake them for turning off the 'next slide' button until they're done speaking.

Seeing the unadjusted bills for my wife's gallbladder removal (~150k), the nearing 10k cost for us (including 4 days in a hospital), and the total cost for a French citizen for the same laparoscopic surgery (~350 euros) a: single payer for all and b: Luigi Mangione did nothing wrong.

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted. I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

Me watching a premiere league game: these announcers are somewhat interesting and provide some interesting commentary that I occasionally disagree with. Me watching any soccer game with US announcers: These are the dumbest people on Earth.

The premiere league announcers never treat it like a radio broadcast, while the US ones do - utterly ruining the viewing experience. Again, give me a live video feed of the game with crowd noise. The announcers add nothing by if value.

Found out a contractor's software engineers are expected to complete 10% more stories than last year with the widespread adoption of LLMs and 'agents'*, and I don't want to burn so many things down.

*agentic? Agentic!? There's nothing agent-y about them. Grrrr. Use a new damn word to describe your half-assed prompt than something that already means something in AI academic literature. Yeah, that's a pretty narrow pet peeve, but fuck them for that too.

Don't know why it was showing at the movie theatre a few blocks from the school, it was years after its theatrical release (and several more years before it was common to see a TV on a mobile cart in a classroom).

Ray Kurzweil also told us hidden Markov models from the 80s were going to bring us to the singularity. Hinton also said radiologists were going to be obsolete by 2023 (he said that in 2018). He had the nerve to say his concerns were much more serious than mine when asked by Rolling Stone.

Expect projects like this to become rare. WB and Paramount are being folded into Skydance. Evidence of their unique corporate identities will get scrubbed, as when Disney took over Fox. And the recent execs who were barely interested in history are being replaced with people who have zero interest.

As we're 2 weeks away from THE DEVILS return, and learning of the departure of the WB studio team that helped make it possible, it's a good time to repost my history of the film in America, with its edits, suppression, and return to availability. projectorhasbeendrinking.blogspot.com/2026/06/disp...
