More and more recently, I've been wanting to say to colleagues "I wasn't asking Claude, I was asking you. I respect you, which is why I asked for thoughts, opinions, and insights. If you feel a chatbot can give good enough or better responses to my questions, then why are you here?"

This week’s newsletter is for people who are tempted to use LLMs to do their writing. Please enjoy. I wrote every word. buttondown.com/monteiro/arc...

I rarely advertise my business. I've been fortunate to receive most of my work through referrals. But I do currently have space for a short-term project! If you need help setting up data collection systems, wrangling a dataset for analysis, or documenting data for sharing, reach out! cghlewis.com

The reception of my talk at DDD Europe yesterday, critical of DDD and of the field of software development in general, was truly magical and heartwarming! Hope there will be a recording online soon!!

Everyone is so tired. Exhausted. And I'm talking to so many friends and colleagues who are hoping for a functional institutional power to come along and take care of them, take the annoying work and worry away. An employer, a publisher, a big funder, an elected leader, etc. I think it's just us.

It's almost like Microsoft keeps designing for Managers who have no idea what they are doing, but everything will be fine as long as they get their dashboard.

If we're just making things up now, can finally go for that Ph.D in Horribleness??

Digital media and people who star in it have been cultural mainstays for teens’ entire lives. Now they can earn a college degree in that very field. Arizona State University recently launched a new bachelor’s degree in content creation. The announcement was met with swift criticism from many sides.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

This gorgeous essay from the social-media-less Lily Hu is everything: on what it means to "do" philosophy amidst pressure to automate it (with lessons that travel much more broadly). Rhymes with brilliant insights from @biblioracle.bsky.social @janerosenzweig.bsky.social Ted Chiang & others

Digital Third Spaces are important for teens! Taking them away does not help anyone!

Scary stories about teens sell. The data tells a different story. After decades studying adolescent mental health, here's what I found: This isn't an anxious generation. It's a resilient one. Let's start treating them that way. go.ted.com/candiceodgers

Looking to connect with people with post-polio syndrome who are connected with politics. For a story I'm going to write but not yet. Email is jmetraux@motherjones.com. Appreciate this being shared with folks IRL if you know those impacted.

I keep hearing people say we need to re-design our website for AI. I keep pushing back saying we need to design for people, not machines and we need to center on accessibility. It's bringing up a question I thought I understood: what is the purpose of a company website?
