Failing to take the province's temperature so catastrophically that you call a snap election then lose it to [consults notes] TBD is a legendarily smooth move.

and 29 km of that is the Seawall- a route for at least 10km of that is primarily recreational. So really, Vancouver is down to 80ish km. Take away arbutus and central valley greenway and that's another 20km. Yeah, Vancouver isn't a bike friendly city.

You are not ready for this list. Unlikely cities that have more “high comfort” bike lanes (not including sharrows) than Vancouver: Vancouver 108km Montreal 251km Toronto 110km San Francisco 224km New York 893km Minneapolis 201km Madison, Wisconsin 188km Possibly Calgary, Winnipeg and Edmonton

14 hours later and my mentions are still full of angry treatises about badly behaved cyclists. Bike lanes are not a reward for good cyclist behavior! They are infrastructure proven to make cities safer for ALL ROAD USERS. Whatever way cyclists have wronged you is irrelevant to the discussion!

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

Every conversation about bike lanes is like: "Car crashes kill a huge number of people every day, including pedestrians, cyclists, & car occupants. Good bike infrastructure has been shown to make everyone safer (& doesn't increase congestion)." "But sometimes cyclists break rules & hit people!"

Almost 2 years ago we helped pass a council motion to add 8 new bus lanes. We've seen minimal progress to date, with predictable excuses: design, consultation, cost... It turns out you can just do good things!

Mihai Cirstea@mihai-cirstea.bsky.social

And by "do cool things" I'm of course also referring to the ability to create all-day bus lanes (Seymour and Howe here) without 8 years of study and consultation. I've genuinely never seen buses go down this corridor more efficiently.

I honestly don’t know if this is 1:1 applicable, but I think it’s relevant that the Luddites didn’t “smash the machines” because they were being replaced, or they feared the machines. They did it because the machines let the companies make WAY more money, yet the Luddites’ wages weren’t increasing.

The members will be voting on the tentative deal. The expectation is while the voting and review process takes place the picket lines will come down. Liquor distribution and other services will take some time to get to normal. Deal comes after 8 days of mediation with Amanda Rogers and Vince Ready.

I’m seeing a lot of soft takes from industry mutuals at the moment that we shouldn’t be so hard on those who use generative AI because it’s becoming harder and harder to resist. Wrong. Betraying your ethics (and your peers) because ‘everyone else is doing it’ does not suddenly make it acceptable.

I, for one, look forward to Canada financially reminding those in America's federal positions of power why they are supposed to divest their individual stock holdings for conflict of interest. It also shields them from targeted political blow-back.

Hey Americans apologizing for your countries' actions. I get it, but at the same time, this isn't a "oopsie" thing. This will destroy the Canadian economy. The action is to call and write your reps and demand better from your electeds. This is economic war on your closest ally, act like it.
