I am confused, i thought it was the Americans doing this more that Russia. Can someone please explain? I know for a fact that JD Vance, Musk, The state Department have all made totally untrue pronouncements about life in Britain. I’m given to understand that they are all over X (?) Am I mistaken?

Garlic from China, beans from Africa, figs from Turkey tomatoes from Holland and hosts of other food sold in British supermarkets, all grow brilliantly in my garden. Why don’t we grow and sell them in the UK? Can’t get the workers to pick them? Is this mad? www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Burnham’s climate COBRA meeting was a massive let down Instead of tackling the underlying cause of wildfires, Burnham is focusing on a climate sceptic talking point - oh, and BBQs. WTF is he doing, @zackpolanski.bsky.social? www.thecanary.co/trending/202...

Curious4truth reposted

Really? Is that it? If this is all that’s come from COBR, it’s pitifully inadequate. As crisis deepens, it beggars belief that there aren’t eg plans to increase resources for the fire service, support for farmers, max workplace temperature, funded community cool spaces & obvs ban on new fossil fuels

I just took part in The National Conversation to share my views on what it's really like living in our area right now. It's a major UK-wide project by researchers at Oxford University, and it only takes a few minutes. You should have your say too!

It’s election week! At this important moment I would like to address your entire planet with a message to the people of Earth. And I think I found the perfect place to do it.

I know he has a lot on, but in the midst of a ferocious drought, fires, heat events and severe threats to food production, it would be quite edifying to hear Andy Burnham mention climate breakdown.

Curious4truth reposted

Just why, @andyburnham.bsky.social Why fall down at the altar of fossil fuel worship? I guess if you wanted to dash all hope that this Labour would be any better than the past, you've done that on day one. More status quo. More death and destruction. Got it. #KeepItInTheGround

Zack Polanski@zackpolanski.bsky.social

It's Day 1 of Andy Burnham being Prime Minister & Donald Trump is celebrating the destruction of our planet. Meanwhile Spain doubled it's renewables - before they had some of the highest bills in Europe and now some of the lowest bills. Labour need to stop appealing to Trump.

Step 2: Prosecute social media companies which fail to stop incitement to racial hatred, violence and riot. Step 3: Treat orchestrated far right violence against asylum seekers and immigrants as terrorism. Because that is what it is.

There was, of course, absolutely nothing to stop these Tories resigning when their own Party was literally in the middle of doing all the things they now claim to be so unhappy about. (Come on Higgins!)

Now it seems I have to choose, do I subscribe to the Guardian or Observer? Which is will give me most factual news and less opinion? Which will cover more international news and be fearless in its investigative journalism? Most of the Observer journalists seem to be established ones 😕Any advice?

Maybe Keir should demand the heads of major US news networks any time they imply Britain is on the brink of civil war or that we live under sharia law. Or does it not work both ways?

Anybody who had a vision to bring American levels of political, cultural and social polarisation to Britain - whether their motive was clicks or cash, ideology, boredom or anything else - would make it their top strategic priority to abolish the BBC, or to damage and diminish it at the very least

John Burn-Murdoch@jburnmurdoch.ft.com

Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments: One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

BBC headline signed Chris Mason at Farage conference: “Reform conference shows party's growing ambition like never before.” Laura Kuenssberg, BBC headline for LibDem conference: “Ed Davey loves clowning around, but is it time the Lib Dems got serious?” Fuck you, BBC.

Trying understand/process events in London on Saturday I still have dozens of questions. Where is the outcry about foreign intervention? How is such incendiary speech from Musk tolerated and mentioned so lightly in the media’? Do the majority of British people even know? How do they feel about it?

All day yesterday the first item on radio 4 “news” was something like “a senior government spokesperson has denied that the government is in crisis”. Well who ever suggested it was? The BBC ! That’s not news. I want the BBC to report on NEWS not opinion
