I'm very puzzled why tech-adjacent elites seem hellbent on nurturing a more vengeful and murderous public.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

To "revel in the death of those who truly deserve it...is normal, good, and aligned with our natural and national order," Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey wrote on X.

I'm sure the real answer is that they think they're gods and therefore no second-order thinking is required, but I also think there might be some Trump pantomiming going on. As in, they still feel like public support (or at least acceptance) is an important resource to have, and they think

appealing to a human being's worst instincts will win them that. The problem for them, IMO, is that most people aren't gleeful bloodthirsty monsters. But they wouldn't know that, since their understanding of the public comes mostly from X The Everything App, home of bloodthirsty monsters.

I'd love to know more about this cultural phenomenon, where people demand deeper meaning in cheap (often children's or YA) entertainment media instead of just directly learning about the things they want to learn about.

Yeah a lot of comments about "I want Batman to be about municipal policy" just comes down to, frankly, people who are too lazy to read non-fiction books about municipal policy

I'm realizing just now that the Wayfair stuff might have been filling a gap in the public panic market, during a time when the longstanding kidnapped-in-a-mall-parking-lot myth rang less true because people weren't shopping in person as much.

competentcuttlefish@cuttlefish.club

IMO it picked up *in* 2020, which was the peak of not only "Epstein didn't kill himself", but also a related conspiracy theory: "Wayfair is running a child sex trafficking ring by listing products under certain names and unusually high prices". Married real social anxieties to cuckoo bananas stuff

The most infuriating thing about the Kushner/Hasan 1-2 is that it makes obvious the fact that Jeffries doesn't believe that Trump and Republicans represent a grave threat that requires our immediate and undivided focus, despite that being an essentially unanimous belief among his party's voters.

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

I think it's bad that the Democrats' House leader is having secret chummy meetings with a guy doing a domestic ethnic cleansing operation and funding a genocide abroad, then spending his entire week going on cable news to complain about a lefty Twitch streamer who nobody knows. Sorry for offending.

"Dem tea party" is a truism at this point but I do think there's a parallel here, where the pre-Trump GOP elites thought there was some mutual was winking and nodding along with all of the psycho rhetoric with the base and that they didn't *actually* believe it.

FWIW I'm not confident this style of criticism is particularly effective nowadays, especially in online spaces. It relies on the assumption that racists are embarrassed enough to not publicly state their beliefs, which Cofnas clearly isn't.

The people of Minneapolis are an inspiration. These folks rallied together against a violent siege enacted by their own government and won. They reminded powerful men that they aren't invincible, and they reminded us that loving your neighbor is the greatest weapon we have.

Renée Good and Alex Pretti will not have died in vain. We will live in a freer America because of their sacrifice. It's now our responsibility to bring it into being.

Greatest website ever created by far. I want to see the day when the ideals of open access to knowledge and global collaboration are reflected everywhere in society.

wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

Kristi Noem has been working with the producer of “Duck Dynasty” to pitch a reality TV show—titled “The American”—where immigrants will compete in a string of challenges across the country “for the honor of fast-tracking their way to U.S. citizenship,” according to a new report.

Normally, an enemy that falls in a pit in Super Mario World will not respawn unless Mario leaves and returns. However, by positioning the camera a specific distance away from its spawn point, Mario can trap the enemy in an eternal cycle of death and rebirth.

"I'm not embarrassed of my own beliefs" is exactly why AOC has crossover appeal to lots of moderate Dems who don't share her ideology

Almost every day I have had to tell myself that the best thing I can do to make the world a better place is to show kindness when others don't but boy is it hard sometimes.

If you’re not afraid of getting canceled, you fucking coward, why didn’t you let them print your name?

You are up to date.
