No, Chuck, because that accepts Trump's framing and sets Democrats starting on their back foot and arguing something that isn't true. Instead of saying "we want safe streets," you point out that we already have them, that this is a power grab and a test for grabbing more. This is not difficult.

I think it’s a mistake for ex-presidents - Bush, Obama, Biden - to stay silent as Trump constantly attacks them. On occasion, they respond, as Obama did recently. But most of the time Trump gets away with lying about them and blasting them without any response. See the press conference today.
