To the extent AI can accelerate (really: cheapen) making a bomb or a bioweapon has to do with it being a fantastic information retrieval and synthesis tool. That is, in some areas, we were reliant on security through obscurity: generally, considered a no-no.

The argument I advance is, very clearly, there a lot of missing features in Anthropic or OpenAI software. If they could snap their fingers and make a secure groupware suite to compete with Office365, I have no doubt they would.

The synthesis is this: making a secure and useful groupware suite is harder than a loitering munition using open source aviation software, a pipe bomb, or maybe even a biological weapon.

I find it quite plausible that some harmful devices will be democratized by AI… just as mass produced GPS and digital cameras for smartphones have given us the modern cheap cruise missile, like the Shahed.

JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks. A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it www.nytimes.com/2026/10/24/c...

Things that are hard to explain to people in the rest of America: the school district in a community where the median sold home is $3,611,172 at $1,798 per square foot, is doing budget cuts because voters voted down renewing a $800 per year property tax.

i've been working on a project that started as a way to map the "tax cut slop" we've seen and it rapidly revealed just how widespread this property tax revolt is basically every candidate in every major race has some kind of property tax relief on their platform (w/ varying degrees of stupidity)

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Norway has solution to this actually, stay at home parents can get their share of the public daycare subsidy as cash, that way parents are not pushed one way or the other. the problem of course is virtually no one on the center or right actually gives a shit about parents

"Making day care free, while offering nothing to stay-at-home parents, appeals to the educated, urban, affluent voters who have come to make up the Democratic base, but not to the electorate at large," Marc Novicoff argues:

Yes, there has been an absolute explosion of 287(g) agreement since Trump took office; more than 1,000 new ones. Multiple GOP-led state legislatures have actually mandated that local police departments signed these agreements, even if they don’t want to.

Ruo Shui@ruoshuiresearch.bsky.social

The rise of 287(g) programs has meant that ICE is increasingly using local police as a very significant force multiplier, with up to 1 in 8 arrests of noncitizens in the interior now being carried out by state and local police. This is going to have profound impacts on community relations.

Guardian US@us.theguardian.com

But an increasing proportion of arrests have been made by local law enforcement in partnership with ICE, via 287(g) agreements. In many regions, it can be difficult to know when local officers are conducting routine policework or immigration enforcement. In many cases, they are doing both.

Gone are the mass raids and militarized metro operations. Gone are the pomp and pageantry. But ICE arrests have hit record levels. ICE operations are no longer concentrated in large American cities. Immigration enforcement officials are also working in suburban and rural areas, all across the US.

Important warning about this year’s super El Niño and the violent weather changes it will cause over the next 18 months, all around the world. Governments have some time to prepare, but not much. The Trump administration has its collective mind on other things. Link via @davidho.bsky.social

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

My former colleagues, Mark Cane and Stephen Zebiak, were the first to successfully predict El Niño more than a year in advance in the late 1980s. Now we’re really good at it, and know the consequences. It’d be irresponsible for governments not to take action. Read this from my buddy Jeff Shaman.

Much to think about here from @froomkin.bsky.social. Assuming Democrats are successful in winning House and Senate majorities this November, what do they do with them? The amount of damage Trump and his pet Republicans in Congress have done in the last two years makes this a difficult question. 🧵

The 80th Congress -- famously called "the Do Nothing Congress" by Truman when he used it to propel his stunning 1948 victory -- had actually accomplished quite a lot. It passed the Marshall Plan, Truman Doctrine, National Security Act, Taft-Hartley and more. Truman *still* ran against it and won.

Lewis Baston@lewisbaston.bsky.social

I’m interested in the ‘almost unmatched’ (though that’s Johnson’s language not Kruse’s) - has any Congress failed as abjectly on all fronts as this one? I seem to recall that past ‘Do Nothing’ Congresses often actually did effective oversight or passed some significant laws?
