Software developer, woodworker, pedestrian & cyclist, former whitewater guide, urbanism activist. Blogger since 1998, software I've written has touched your life.
I have yet to read this article, but hearing Joel Salatin be anti-vaccine, seeing vans driven 200 miles to our "local" farmer's market, and having our CSA say "oh, yeah, those are from 'partner farms'" when we observed that they were delivering produce they didn't grow made me very skeptical.
Michael Pollan reflects on what has and hasn’t changed in the 20 years since he wrote The Omnivore’s Dilemma. “Looking at the landscape of food and farming today, I’m sorry to report that things haven’t changed all that much.” [theatlantic.com]
I think the local Blue Zones staff have done some things to improve quality of life in Petaluma, I wish the Healthcare District had thrown those dollars at local orgs that don't have some international org based on hogwash taking a cut, and are focused more on evidence-based improvements.
Ran into one of those "optimize your life" articles that took extensive data from "blue zone" research. Just a reminder: the data on so-called "blue zones" where people supposedly live longer lives is completely corrupt:

Spent a portion of the weekend writing a Rust+Slint app. I am not falling in love with this language. So much cognitive load pushed back on to the coder, so much boilerplate.
I know I'll get to the place where much of this reads subconsciously, but I'm still doing so much Emacs "build out the code for this list of properties" rather than having the language do this, and that's super brittle.
*puts on pedantic hat* California High-Speed Rail review period was about 18 years and now that the reviews are complete, now the barrier to building is PG&E lollygagging instead of moving its stuff out of the way like they were paid to do

seems like "on the orders of a nazi every major news outlet on the planet hounded an innocent man to death because he's black" should be one of the biggest stories of the year
1. Original D&D
2. Top Secret. So much Top Secret. (My Dad, who had been in that business, for what little he could talk about it, was super amused by it...)
3. Gamma World
4. AD&D
5. Traveler
My first five RPGs:
1. Traveller (my first character died in character creation)
2. D&D (the box edition with the red dragon)
3. Gamma World
4. Top Secret

After a while exploring iTerm2 and Ghostty, I wondered what I was actually getting from them, and reverted to Terminal.
Then I tried to paste some Unicode.
Great, another Mac place where we use TextEdit to workaround... Sigh.
Most of this fat yellow wedge of 19 million people are not terminally online pro Palestinian leftists.
They're average people who've been struggling for the last decade, left behind by two blue presidents' economic recoveries, disgusted with being gaslit by their own party that EVERYTHING'S GREAT!
"Volume is not value. AI is creating a reckoning for organizations that lack fundamental disciplines, such as defining use-case value ahead of time and establishing criteria for when to walk away."
"When to walk away" has entered the building.

Similarly, women are better at detail oriented tasks like graduating from college or being doctors, but edpol forces them to date educated men. For this reason, colleges should offer useless male-coded vanity degrees, like math or CS, to create eligible bachelors to be future stay at home chefs.
Thinking about The New Republic article saying that 73% of these donation dollars go to consultants and vendors.
Also pondering that they have Charlene's name associated with my number.
found out that my mother in law decided she was aggressively pro trans rights literally by going, I don't know anything about this but everyone who is against trans rights is also against free school lunch, the issue I know and care a lot about, so this must be the correct way to feel about this
Everyone that works for a Silicon Valley company should have to read Jessamyn’s field reports of people trying to use their devices, then think about their own product quality, then make appropriate changes.
I have been ranting about this to anyone who will listen. It's not just that younger donors are turned off, it's that they're far more likely to understand how DEEPLY stupid it is to click a link in an unsolicited text and then enter credit card information on the linked page.
Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.
Intermittent rewards work. Last Saturday we went to a gem and mineral show and bought a couple of raffle tickets. Charlene won way more than we spent in tickets. I suspect we'll be joining the local rock hound organization soon...
After reviewing evidence, Woodland Police Department determined that an ICE agent’s SUV did strike U.S. Citizen Antonio Moreida in Woodland on Tuesday, and Antonio did not jump onto the hood like ICE alleged.
The self-delusion required to attribute the lack of logging to "an earlier instruction not to send messages during a Slack history search" is really something.

Not unless you replayed the same sequence with temperature set to zero and fixed seeds, with and without that request, and even then that's attributing volition to the model that it may or may not have.
This looks to be the ultimate selective prosecution. Feds have been taking a pass on cases involving marijuana distribution businesses, which are still, to most peoples’ surprise, mostly technically illegal under federal law. And they also indicted her daughter

A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

Nathan Spindel has a Petaluma voter guide. I disagree with him on a couple of points (I'm a Jackie Elward fan), but it's a worthwhile read.

Was feeling all cocky about Flutterby being written in Perl, then realized that I've exposed .php endpoints to serve gzip bombs if people try to access them.
I don't *think* I was vulnerable, but the OOM handling thing makes me wonder...

Thought: computer games are interfaces that make it deliberately difficult to achieve your goals.
If software is developed by people who enjoy computer games, that explains a lot about modern user interfaces. And libraries. And package managers.

/me raises hand. I mean, I'm not *not* voting for a Dem, but I sure am donating to issues over candidates, and directly to specific campaigns.
Also: texting, at most, raises turnout ¼%. There's no evidence that turnout is for the candidate behind the effort.

I fear Democrats will alienate some voters with the 30-50 daily "please send money" texts. I suspect they're NOT WORKING. If you're like me, you bulk delete the texts without looking at them. It's all just spam, and some voters might be sufficiently pissed off by it that it affects their vote.

Why we need better addressing than domain names, and some sort of distributed store, so that we don't lose the connections just because someone's domain name or server disappears.
