My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

I’m reminded of this article from a few weeks ago about the people holding up the Internet sheets.works/data-viz/hol...

sheets.worksThe People Holding Up the Internet: Who Maintains Open SourceFour billion phones ask one text file what time it is, kept by a UCLA lecturer in his spare time. We counted who maintains the code under your phone.
Charlie Warzel@cwarzel.bsky.social

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

I have been ranting about this to anyone who will listen. It's not just that younger donors are turned off, it's that they're far more likely to understand how DEEPLY stupid it is to click a link in an unsolicited text and then enter credit card information on the linked page.

Adam Bonica@adambonica.bsky.social

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

The true glory of social media is that in the before times, you had to switch to another whole article in the newspaper before Gell-Mann amnesia kicked in. Like, click a link or turn a page. Now it's just a continual Lethe waterfall as the scroll goes by.

This is interesting both in itself and for the detailed technical discussion.

We were investigating Wedgewood for faking their data and emailed them for comment this morning, ahead of publishing the findings tomorrow. They are now trying to cover up their fraud with the "we were doing a social experiment" excuse. Full story here: blog.fiftyplusone.news/p/fiftypluso...

He'd be more popular if he gave out whole candy bars this Halloween, but I guess it's better than Chick tracts.

Hitler could credibly promise full employment in exchange for giving up your rights. This is what we get. www.wsj.com/business/mus...

You know what I want to see? I want them to strip every last ounce of gold Trump tacked up in the White House, melt it down, and cast a statue of Zelenskyy as an apology gift to the Ukrainian people.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads
