My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Spare a thought for @zaltzcricket.bsky.social, who didn't get to mention either the Serbia or Brazil election results in this series of the News Quiz. Still, maybe the upcoming Bugle will have a slightly different tone to many of the last, uhhh, decade or so!

I've finally got around to writing down some thoughts about my #AmperSand habit. 👩‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family history! 🌊 Coastlines! 🧠 Very shallow philosophical musings! 📷️ Lots of ampersands! daveybot.wordpress.com/2026/10/25/o...

daveybot.wordpress.comOn AmpersandsOver the past couple of years I’ve got into the habit of making ampersands on beaches. It started on a whim, but I’ve kept at it and, over that time, my thoughts on the subject have dev…

It occurs to me that I forgot to wish @thebugle.bsky.social a happy 19th birthday, last week. Oh well. Happy birthday to them anyway, to Andy, to the co-hosts past, present, and future, and to their ever-expanding league of power-hungry, Machiavellian producers!

It’s a long way from their usual locations, but I do feel as though it’s only a matter of time before Little Alex Horne is using this as a location for one of their weirder tasks…

Me: ugh, modern landmark architecture is just rich people showing off how much money they have. What happened to restrained displays of class and taste? 18th Century Scotland: PINEAPPLES!!!

Here's the cumulative volume of curtailment and turn-up actions over the past week… We had a particularly heavy period of transmission constraint throughout September, both in terms of energy volume as well as cost. Why? ⬇️

I realise that, over the years, I’ve taken several versions of basically the same photo looking between the Forth Bridges, now. Sort of pleasing, really, but I can’t really explain why. #bridges #photography #Siblings

Please read this, folks. And reflect on the fact that my main reaction to this heartbreaking account is not just sadness but jealousy. I wish we could leave, too.

An (inter)nationally important archive and library being moved to an industrial estate in Bonnyrigg so the existing site in central Edinburgh can be turned over to student housing is so very on trend.

...Also I do not like the BBC framing this as "Sturgeon's". Not one bit. She introduced it, sure, but everybody signed up to it (recent support in Holyrood was unanimous) and it's actually FOR quite a lot of people who genuinely deserve it, not simply a thing with her name on it.

The new version of our app is out in the stores. This fixes alot of minor bugs but most importantly adds explanatory tutorials that display as you start using it. If you were confused before, try the new version and it may help! Find it on the App Store / Google Play - and enjoy your walks!

Regarding my previous repost. ...I'm really glad @lornaslater.bsky.social is speaking up for the start-ups in Argyle House. But I also think the architecture is special, too, even if many would disagree. There aren't many buildings like this left in Edinburgh, and they deserve protection.

…Quite apart from aesthetic issues, there's also a solid environmental case for simply not demolishing buildings. Can't help thinking it's time we resurrected the slogan of the architects who once campaigned (though nobody listened) to save the original Penn Station in NYC: Polish, don't demolish!

I am also willing to throw down to save the Kennedy Center but you have to admit (as a historian of modern architecture) that THIS being the building that finally awakens the fervor is pretty funny. Specifically designed to appease the marble-red-and-gold lovers!

Hold your nose and do it if you can, folks. Bit of a stinky one, this year, but probably better to grapple with the wretched thing than ignore it.

This summer three fawn keep making their way out of the Dells under Slateford Bridge to graze downstream of the Centre. Today they were standing in the water, chilling, when they met a class of Sciennes P7s. Great art was made as a result.

I can only assume that a dozen people, six months from now, will be permanently humming to themselves... "I'm doing science and I'm Still Alive" https://flic.kr/p/2sA9JtC

flickr.comArctic isolation for scienceSoon to be frozen in space and time, this alien-looking vessel is beginning its first mission into drifting ice in the Arctic Ocean. A dozen people won’t leave it for eight months to study how life adapts to extremes in a region highly sensitive to climate change. The winter crew will spend most of that time without seeing the Sun onboard this unique scientific observatory. The long polar night will last 120 days, with average winter temperatures of −25°C. Trapped in Arctic ice for science, this laboratory-observatory developed by the Tara Ocean Foundation shares many of the implacable isolation and environmental conditions of the International Space Station or the Concordia station in Antarctica. Scientists from the European Space Agency (ESA) see the Tara Polaris I expedition as a unique opportunity to study human behaviour on a drifting laboratory. The crew consists of scientists, sailors, a media professional and a physician, all of whom underwent the same psychological screening given to teams at the Concordia station, who spend months completely cut off from the rest of the world. “The challenge is extraordinary for this mission, which simulates long-duration spaceflight isolation and confinement. Moving sea ice adds uncertainty and psychological stress compared with a winter-over at the stationary Concordia base,” explains Melike Balk, ESA’s science coordinator for the mission. ESA is contributing questionnaires based on international standards to monitor the crew’s health, including sleep, stress and cognitive performance as they cope with the challenges of the dark and cold winter months. Melike is particularly interested in comparing outcomes between the reduced oxygen and air pressure at Concordia Station, which sits at an altitude of 3223 m above sea level, and the sea-level conditions at the Tara Polar Station. “It will be fascinating to compare the personal experiences of the Tara crew with tales of the Concordia winterers. While Concordia is similar to a habitat on a white Mars, Tara will be more like the spaceship travelling towards it… With the two missions combined, we have a unique chance to gain insights for future deep space exploration,” adds Carmen Possnig, who spent 13 months as a research medical doctor at Concordia station and will be coordinating the experiments taking place during the next winter-over. She is also a member of ESA's astronaut reserve. ESA and the Tara Polaris consortium are also exploring a long-term Earth observation partnership focused on calibrating satellite data. During the first drift, ESA will share the exact times and paths of several satellites flying over the vessel. With that information, the crew onboard can take scientific measurements as the satellites pass overhead and compare their on-ground data with the orbital observations. The missions involved are Copernicus Sentinel-3 and ESA's EarthCare and Cryosat satellites. Tara Polaris I is the first of ten research drifts planned over the next 20 years. The oval-shaped, 27-metre drifting polar base sits in the Arctic to study the biodiversity under the polar pack ice in the world’s fastest-warming region. The crew will finish the first wintering leg of the expedition in April 2027. By the end of next year, the vessel will break through the ice and make its way back to France, passing between the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard and Greenland.
