October 14th - a good day to be grateful to my parents for all their support & encouragement. All holidays included visits to historic sites & in 1966 this included Battle Abbey, though some months before the 900th anniversary.

The BBC News is wittering on about the Duchess of Sussex’s (irony alert) desire for privacy and an award-winning fat brown bear. These are not important enough to merit coverage.

That excellent series of TRIH has me wondering whether Magdala Crescent in Edinburgh was named after General Napier’s exploits.

The Rest is History, which I enjoy, has just mentioned the Tabots that were looted by the British in Napier's expedition. They did not say that St John's Church, Princes Street returned its Tabot recently when an alert Associate Rector recognised what it was. @therestishistory.bsky.social

The visiting cleric began, unforgettably: “I first knew my wife when she was 16.” Badly suppressed mirth from the teachers who were familiar with the Authorised Version. The colleague on my left whispered “Legal, but only just”.

The BBC’s coverage of the dangers of AI pussyfoots round the fact that the companies developing it are owned by extremely wealthy men who are hoping to make even more 💰💰. Competitive greed is a significant part of this story.

Might Burnham call a snap General Election so that the spending rules would kick in immediately & stop Reform using much of the crypto billionaires’ donations until after the election?

The ability of the richest & most powerful men in the world to position themselves against "the elite" - a category that excludes the world's richest man, its biggest media magnates, the UK's richest party & the biggest donors in UK history - may be the most effective lie in modern political history

Following the example of the LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD, I have decided to change the name of our local river here in the West End of Glasgow. I have signed an executive order to change its name to the RIVER KELVIN. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Students are increasingly shifting towards university subjects with higher financial returns (economics, maths, law) and away from degrees that don’t pay (English, philosophy, performing arts). The same trend is evident in A-level entries. Students have become more discerning. A thread... 🧵

Chuffed to hear my punch needle Rooster is heading to Turkey once the St Martin's Art Exhibition closes. The exhibition is on this week, 12 noon - 4pm Monday to Friday and 10am - 2.30pm on Saturday. Cafe with home bakes. St Martin's Episcopal Church 232 Dalry Road Edinburgh. Admission is free.

That’s a must read. I first read Last and First Men as a teenager & enjoy periodic rereadings. There’s plenty of tragic disorder at the moment.

“Two experiences have dominated me: philosophy, and the tragic disorder of our whole terrestrial hive.” From the author’s statement in Olaf Stapledon’s book Philosophy and Living (1939).

Re the Emily Wilson discourse - her Dad (A N Wilson) was the king of literary feuds. A good family tradition. Best one was his feud with Bevis Hillier who hoaxed him into including a fake letter in his biography of Bejteman where the first letter of each sentence spelt "AN Wilson is a shit".

Happy Birthday, USA. Thanks for Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, the Marx Brothers, John P Marquand, Art Tatum. All these & many more outweigh Donald Trump in the balance.
