1/ Bird flu is one of the things that keeps epidemiologists up at night. Now, a report of bird flu spreading undetected on a Utah mink farm for months is raising serious questions about our surveillance systems. Here’s why it matters and what else we’re watching this fall. 🧵

Trump doesn’t get to tell American Jews how to vote. We don’t all think alike about Israel, and no politician gets to decide what our Jewish identity should mean to us. We’ll make those decisions for ourselves.

Ethics aside, this take could use some contact with reality. Biden's expanded CTC didn't motivate recipients to vote to maintain it. Trump offered $5000 checks and it hurt him in the polls. The empirical claim that welfare creates single issue voters just doesn't hold up.

Non-Jews telling Jews that they are doing their Jewish identities inauthentically if they have the "wrong" politics is in fact textbook antisemitism. But somehow I'm not holding my breath for the ADL to weigh in on this one, because it would require them to acknowledge many Jews support El-Sayed.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

Trump on El-Sayed: "Any Jewish person that supports this guy should be ashamed of themselves. I'll tell you right now, you should never speak to them again. I'm polling at 99% in Israel. I cannot understand how anybody who's Jewish can even think about voting for this guy."

One of the most salient aspects of today's politics is how everyone imagines a conspiratorial "them" controlling things behind the scenes. Elon Musk is literally powerful enough to affect the course of the Ukraine war, but he's still imagining faceless puppet masters who need to be unmasked.

If Zohran Mamdani or Abdul El-Sayed had used the word “Shylock” as an insult, the ADL would be attacking them by name relentlessly. But Donald Trump used it, so we get a generic condemnation of the word without any specific reference to who actually used it, and with no assumption of intent.

Ben Shapiro is too stupid to realize how much this recapitulates the tropes of classic antisemitism - the distant foreign conspiracy to which everyone can be tied. In the 1930’s, every Ashkenazi Jew was two degrees of separation from a Communist, so it was too dangerous to let them into the US.

“I should only pay taxes for things I use” is a fun precept to adopt after you’ve stopped using services that were funded by the full tax base — you would have needed to pay much much more when your kids were in school if seniors hadn’t been pitching in with property taxes back then!
