Absolutely dissolved into a perfect puddle at this exceptionally beautiful gift from dearest @jackkibble-white.bsky.social who had my erasure poem/sound work for radio Wing of Glass put on vinyl & who designed the perfect sleeve. Truly one of the most wonderful things anyone has ever done for me🩷💕

49 today and my 15 year old self is the one getting all the presents (complimentary)

Painting created by Martin Birch c.1970s, in the art therapy studio at Netherne Hospital where he was compelled to live. This is part of a large body of surviving work which ranges from David Shrigley-esque cartoons to biting critique of the psychiatric system & literary & philosophical reflections

About to start making this cut & sew Noah’s ark from a 1972 Women’s Weekly magazine. I had the kit as a small child in the 80s & neither cut, nor sewed it then & having recently bought this one from eBay for a tenner, I’m hoping that, this time, I will actually accomplish both cutting & sewing…

All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed

!!! I am a big big fan of @historyworkshop.org.uk so it's a real honour to have them publish this piece on radical history, print culture and walking. With many thanks to brilliant editor @sophie-turbutt.bsky.social and @btwhite.bsky.social for the encouragement 📚

'My favourite thing about these books is the way writers, publishers and events reappear across time.' @kamackinnon reflects on the Glaswegian radical print she has collected, and her experiences sharing it with the public on historical walking tours (@radicalglasgowtour).

Warner Bros: Did you film that adaptation of The Devils of Loudon? Ken Russell: sure did boss, real fuckin sexy, just like you asked

Painting of an eye, created 1960s, by Mavis Oultram, in the art therapy studio at Netherne hospital, where she was compelled to live. Eyes appear in each one of the handful of her surviving works. Little biographical information is currently known to us

Also, removing the spurious pall of the moral, not letting my basic value as a human be in doubt. Striking the 7 deadly sins from my vocabulary: all behaviour is communication, even your own. No one is “lazy” to condemn oneself as such stops us finding the real reason for an inability to do a thing

I’ve found what can really help is reframing the angry, self-critical inner shout of “why the fuck can’t you just do this/what the hell is wrong with you?” as a curious compassionate question. Turning into a genuine, caring, solution seeking “what’s the matter/why are you currently unable to do X?”

Enquiring it of myself as if to another in the same distress & frustration. Asking calmly, with gentleness & care, often, I even call myself love, or darling. There is always a physical or mental reason for being “stuck” & identifying the reason for the inability often brings with it a solution

Finally finished for @skullsandsheets.bsky.social brilliant fundraising auction for domestic violence charities. A folk collision where a 1920s tray meets a 60s dress, a 50s tray cloth sewn by a stranger meets 40s doilies & napkins embroidered by my gran, her fake pearls & my own stitches + painting

Rose Ruane@regretteruane.bsky.social

Slowly getting there, for @skullsandsheets.bsky.social amazing auction to raise funds for domestic violence charities. Adding Mari Lwyds in appliqué & embroidery to this 1950s floral tray cloth, layering fabric fragments & embellishments from other eras, enjoying the enthusiastic amateur approach

It has been such a pleasure to make at a hard time, a joy to combine crafts created by strangers (tray & cloth) with ones made by late family members & to allow myself to be amateur & enthusiastic, to create something that feels like a folk object from a Bagpuss jumble sale in @hookland.bsky.social

As someone who has collected a lot of crafts, some by amateurs, some by artisans, I know both kinds of objects bring me joy, through the human hand of creation. I also know I’m an enthusiastic amateur & could only make something that looks wonky but made with love & it felt great to embrace that

Next door’s baby woke up roaring disconsolately at seven and has scarcely paused for breath since, and it seems to me, to be a perfectly reasonable response to this gloomy grey Monday morning

Sunday domestic bliss hour, home all lamplit, still & spotless, smelling of cooking & laundry. The honeyflood of well-being before the schoolheart, soulsink, doom-dread shatters the cosy contentment like a tin bath of daft oul downhill dicks barrelling through the window of a mattress shop
