I’ve been writing about the politics and impact of Donald Trump on the US and world, with special attention to Europe and the University of Michigan, and most of it is free to read. This thread, in order, brings it all together. I hope it’s useful as a resource on the different issues.

A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

Good essay here from @juliaazari.bsky.social. Since Julia is in part asking for other social scientists to weigh in here, I thought I'd add some thoughts that have been germinating in my head for while. The main point is that the base of evidence that anti-trans ads 'work' is paper thin. (1/2)

Julia Azari@juliaazari.bsky.social

Social scientists have lent our names to calls for electoral system change and rule of law, because of the findings of our disciplines. We should do the same for anti-trans ads, which have dubious benefit and demonstrable harm. My latest at GP/BP goodpoliticsbadpolitics.substack.com/p/social-sci...

Judiciary Dems report: “Above all, the actual evidence we have seen—as shared in the accounts and stories of 11 women, each described below—indicates that Trump abused, assaulted, and even raped numerous women alongside, and in coordination with, the most infamous sex trafficker in history.”

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

‘“There is no other USAID,” said Bonnie Carlson, a former USAID civil servant who was laid off in September 2025, “and more than 11,000 of us just hit a microscopic job market for international development and humanitarian assistance professionals all in the same year.”’

I’m genuinely convinced that something like a “liberal world order” can be best reconstructed if a future, better, US is working with assertive and powerful partners who share basic values and attributes.

And on AI: “I don’t want to depend on Chinese nor American AI. I want to create a Brazilian intelligence.” He also mentioned having Brazilian data centres dealing with our intelligence. “We will no longer be a peripheral country. We want to be central.”

So I’m no Brazil specialist but: in a presidentialist system this just sets up a few years of intense conflict. Just like November is probably setting up two years of intense inter branch conflict in the US

Am I right to be kind of surprised at the Catholic and evangelical patterns?

The swing to Lula was larger in municipalities with more irreligious or evangelical residents, while municipalities with more Catholics swung towards Bolsonaro

Reading about accidents is a great way to understand systems- specific ones and systems in general. Can’t say that when I started reading this that I anticipated that the deficient system would be the federal government’s history mismanagement of Washington DC metro area

“One of the…frustrating aspects of the disaster at National Airport is the sheer number of data sources that pointed to the existence of a problem, and the surprising failure of virtually every official to see the risk written into that data until after the accident.” …that’s like all DC history

“The Pentagon still wants to fly dark helicopters through DC airspace; the FAA is cutting control tower staffing targets and forcing controllers to work more hours; soon, I expect, politicians will work up the courage to once again demand more flight slots into DCA”

“On the relative prioritization of almost every issue, undecided voters look more like voters who have already decided to vote for Democrats than those who say they’ll vote Republican.” I’ll wager a lot of them are habitual Republicans who are unhappy but don’t want to vote D.

The corollary of “politics is the art of the possible” is that “discerning and changing what’s possible is the really hard bit”

Ian Dunt@iandunt.bsky.social

Again, worth analysing Burnham as if he is really good at politics: moving red lines from things EU can't accept (free movement) to things it might (euro). Changing terms of debate on an issue from negative (uncontrolled immigration) to positive (Brits can go abroad for work).

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Absolutely great replication of a conversation that sounds important but has no actual content. I assume they think they will be able to come up with adequate content and are probably right for many use cases
