It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

The first film I remember being taken to was 2001: A Space Odyssey. I was WAAAAAAAY to young to be there *and* to form a memory of it, so it must have been secondary release... which somehow made it to a mainline theatre in a dinky city in the Canadian prairies.

Mark Thompson@markreckons.bsky.social

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

If you don't get at least a little damp in the eyes reading this thread, you've got something important broken inside you.

This one's maybe a little on the ling side, but trust me, it's worth it. I've cried reading it multiple times. (1/3)

I get it. 1) Elon says egregious nonsense. 2) Coterie of lickspittles nod and agree. 3) Elon thinks "Wow. People sure are willing to swallow egregious nonsense! WHICH IS WHAT AI MAKES!" [Side-track: Elon owns a platform which rewards nonsense-shouting and punishes displays of critical thinking]

Sometimes we’re unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when it’s done we know all the things that it isn’t, but we can’t see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head. 🖊️🦑

I love this answer so much because it gets at the heart of what humanities scholars do and what's so threatening to authoritarians about it: Criticism is not inherently a negative. Criticism is looking at something to understand the parts of it and form deeper opinions about it with appreciation.

This was such a great answer from Abdul El-Sayed about his previous criticisms of President Obama.

I would like someone with a grip on physics to work out the necessary fuel consumption, and thus tankage, for an actual vehicle (let's say 1500kg to steelman the matter) to get that kind of delta-V. Let's not look too closely at the observed ballistics, either. We don't want to be mean.

For indigenous peoples day i wanted to bring attention to the chinook tribe. I live on unconceded chinook territory however they are not federally recognized. Meaning they have no protections They were legally recognized in 2001 however this was reversed 18 months later Official website below

The number of time I've stood up and shrieked about a fountain pen not being in an appropriate setting for its period of manufacture is large. Usually three seconds on screen and not germane to the story, too. I also melt warmly when the pen is *correct* in a setting.

Yes this! Also who's out here writing a book so EXACTLY INTERCHANGEABLE with another author's book that a reader would, in theory, only buy one of the two? Nobody! Books books books delicious books Nothing more delicious than a book I want ALL writers to write more books for me

Jukka Särkijärvi@nitessine.bsky.social

The idea of authors being in competition with each other is bizarre to me. Books aren't cars. We don't get just one.

When colonization came to call in the US, many folks wrote about america as a pristine Eden whose forest were filled with delights and bounty. This was because indigenous folk (Like mine) built up food forest. Things that were razed and destroyed as a part of racist violence. Colonization is ongoing

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. My comment on this excellent thread: those who would shut down museums and libraries absolutely do not value other people and their potential, and in many cases would openly declare the vast majority as not more than lubricant for the machinery of commerce.

J Pardo@jdpardo.bsky.social

I posted this last week without comment, but I'm going to comment now. The people who established the system of museums in the West had a very specific reason for doing so: they thought that having an appreciation for the wonders of the world was absolutely necessary for being a good citizen.

I would really love to see what Tom Clancy's books would be like if he had started his career in 2015. Like... I'm trying to picture CARDINAL OF THE KREMLIN with *anything* like the current cast of weirdos running around on the US side.

People! Book people, people who love books & people who talk about books! Here is a beautiful thing! Dunsany's stories are rich with ancient & undiluted wonder, & they deserve to be read again. And Thomas Brown's illustrations will carry them like music, deep into your heart.

Kith of The Elf Folk and others (New collection of the work of Lord Dunsany Illustrated by me) is coming out at the end of the month. Do and book site/ media/bloggers want to talk with me about it? I...have a lot to say. #booksky

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Well. I guess, based on what I've heard about it, this is OK (although Yugoslavia of the previous age is a bit dubious).

Let's talk about a book series NOT getting attention that is among the finest of the decade: James Elkins' Five Strange Languages, the latest of which is Stories, Like Illnesses-- just released to resounding silence. Prior 2 novels are among my favorites ever and the new one so far is as good 1/?

"What if we could go back in time and kill baby Hitler?" is one thing. "What if we could go back in time and *possibly* kill the grandparents of Hitler, Salk, Einstein, Oishi, Chandrasekar, Banting, Best, Franklin, and Parton so there's more ice cream now?" is quite another.

The funny thing (it's not really funny) about the various cults that dip into and out of AI is that the most chilling thing I've heard from AI boosters isn't "AI will kill everyone." It's "we will use AI to benefit all of humanity."

My favourite, in terms of imagined backstory, is the single snowshoe. [comfortable shiver]
