RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

just building on this thread shitting on RFK, the mosfet, the literal foundation upon which all modern electronics (particularly computers) is built, was invented by an egyptian guy named mohamed atalla en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed...

I’m guessing the results from the first batch of GPUs in space are bad because instead of hearing about how wonderful orbital data centers are Elon has pivoted hard towards “only I can break regulations fast enough to build regular earth based data centers, unlike those losers at Coreweave”

Oh, dear. I had the good fortune to meet him a few times at conventions and had lunch with him once in Australia. Such a lovely fellow and of course an iconic figure in science fiction. RIP.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

3/ The Atlas estimates that people who sat out round one or left their ballots blank were worth far more to Lula than the voters of the candidates who got knocked out. My read: he did not win over many enemies. He won back people who had given up on voting.

Some people are too stupid to understand how the second round of an election works. Am I talking about the wingnut posters or am talking about those who follow them? Yes.

For anyone still using algorithm driven social media

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

I've always believed Oxford Street could be so much more than a road. Today we begin a new chapter as the nation’s high street goes traffic free, creating a place where people can spend time, enjoy the atmosphere and experience the very best of our city.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Bolsonario’s party also filed for the extension, claiming bad weather was making it difficult for people to reach polling stations.

Saul Staniforth@saulstaniforth.bsky.social

Deborah Barros Leal Farias explains that Flavio Bolsonaro is saying the Brazilian presidential election should be annulled because voting hours were extended by 2 hours. But what he's not saying is that his own party was one of those asking for the extension!

A year ago I moved to London. It didn’t take long before I was called a Londoner, by an English visitor to the city who needed help navigating the tube. Despite my mostly US accent. Love this place.

On the same day, huge crowds are welcoming Machado back to Venezuela. Her return was blocked for months by the US-backed regime. Pressure from below finally made it impossible for Trump and Rodriguez to keep her out

Voting in democracy *does* make a difference.

Anne Applebaum@anneapplebaum.wsocial.eu

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

Saw Wildwood yesterday. I was really looking forward to it. Super hyped from the trailers. The movie itself, the animation, was stunning. The story, not so much. And looking into it, it seems the fault is the source material.

It was quite flimsy, not sure what it wanted to focus on outside “adventure.” Quite tropy and lazy, feeling like it just wanted to seem fantastical by putting people with Russian names in an Oregon forest. Not really exploring interesting themes. And don’t get me started on the coyote/crows thing.

I’m not gonna get into an argument about the “morality” of looting. The question is: do you want to reach your goals, eg. improve school funding? And images of desperate shop owners trying to stop masked people from sacking their stores, ain’t gonna help.

The idea that the US deliberately humiliated Russia in the 1990s is a bizarre myth. We were overtly solicitous and supportive of them and their hurt feelings. We just didn’t accept their claim that the nations or Eastern Europe could never seek their own destiny.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

The US and the West welcomed Russia into the community of nations after the Cold War. Investment poured in. The G7 turned into G8. The idea that Poland, Estonia, etc. forming their own foreign relations was so unfair to Moscow that Russia is entitled to murder Ukrainians 20 years later is insane.

The goal isn’t to “protect girls in sports from trans people.” It is ultimately to drive all girls and women away from sports.

Doctors and nurses are voicing their objections. I-638 would require EVERY girl who wants to participate in sports to go through biological sex verification. That means expensive, invasive, and utterly gross examinations. Protect our kids and let them play. Vote NO on I-638

Some people like to solve 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzles or embroidery tapestries that they then frame and put up on their wall. Why spend so much time and money in something that’s merely decorative?
