The mid-2010s was a golden age for high-concept Fox cop shows. “Cop show but it’s robots.” “Cop show but it’s a light workplace sitcom.” “Cop show but it’s a long form Batman origin.” “Cop show featuring a time-displaced Ichabod Crane.”

i'll tell ya one thing i miss is FREELANCE ASSIGNMENTS. i have never been a good pitch-er but i can pretty much write whatever someone tells me to and i used to have a stable of editors who liked hurling ideas at me and seeing what i came up with. the salad days of $300 assignments from MEL lol

Every movie theater should have a desk where you can immediately pre-order the home release of whatever movie you just saw. Like if you loved the movie and you just spent $20 on popcorn and a soda and someone said “for another $20 you can own that movie forever” you’d feel stupid not buying it.

Some comic strips use four panels to set up one punchline and then there’s Swan Boy where there’s like one setup panel and then a punch every subsequent panel and they cascade perfectly

It was already one of the most memorable weeks of Pat Murphy's life. And then ... Bruce Springsteen called. I talked to the Brewers manager about his conversation Wednesday with the Boss Unlocked and free to read www.nytimes.com/athletic/771...

My Obama Number is 3 via like nine different vectors, with the next degree always being Bruce Springsteen. Let’s go with Jack Antonoff -> Boss -> Obama

To flip some discourse script for a bit: what’s y’all’s Obama number (ie degrees of separation with the former president)? Mine is 3

Taye Diggs had a recurring role on this show as an extremely charming man who once giddily describes that on weekends he “put[s]on a totally realistic bear suit and hang[s] out in the park.” And the delivery is fucking aces. So many good bits. I should find the DVD sets.

Very funny to think about the Hollywood history that wouldn’t happen if some of these shows had been hits

It’s crazy the amount of money and effort that’s being used to keep a four-hour documentary about Elon Musk out of theaters as if a single person who likes Elon Musk is going to sit down and watch a four-hour documentary in theaters, much less have their minds changed about him.

I know I grind this axe a lot, begging people to divert their money from oligarch-owned streaming services to indie creators, and I know it’s a self-serving thing for a guy with a Patreon to say. I just rarely see anyone say it who DOESN’T have skin in the game and that kinda scares me.

Time to stop paying these guys every month! I’m not saying “no more movies and TV,” personally I’m gonna still go see movies in theaters bc I don’t want theaters to die, but the we gotta stop treating these studios like the SAAS tech companies they want to be. Cancel your subscriptions.
