Breaking news: Indiana University plant microbiologist Roger Innes has been locked out of his laboratory by the school in response to a request by one of his federal funders. The move comes after Innes complained about the government’s prosecution of Chinese postdocs. https://scim.ag/4tsDqRr

I'd learn how to install Linux on VMware Fusion, running on my Mac, from a Debian iso image. I'd learn how to setup up SSH and rehash the debate around what the best shell to use. I'd go with Zsh and fall down the Oh My Zsh rabbit hole. I'd also learn why it's GNU/Linux and not just Linux.

What would I do in a situation like this? If I were just starting my career, I'd be listening to everything. I'd bet on the future and hedge on the fundamentals. I'd pick the most popular agentic coding tool and go all in. I'd hedge that bet by learning the fundamentals of software development.
We are asking developers to do more with less, including less pay. Either we have managed to cut cost without reducing output, or we have increased output, but have very little to show for it. I'm sure there is another narrative around creating new opportunities, but I'm not hearing about those.

Yes. Art is for everyone.
“When I speak about making our city more affordable, my vision is not limited to the homes that we live in or the child care that we’re making universal — it’s also a vision where we make it possible for working people to afford lives of joy, of art, of rest, of expression.”

After I got fired by DOGE, I wanted to respond to this climate of fear. So I started working at SecureDrop, making software for whistleblowers to communicate with journalists. Our response to all this is to expand who can run and use our software, while safeguarding whistleblowers' anonymity.

My colleague Sanjay Ghemawat & I have done a fair bit of performance tuning of various pieces of code. We wrote an internal Performance Hints document ~2 years ago as a way of identifying some general principles & we've recently published a version of it externally. Doc: abseil.io/fast/hints.h...

Patricia Management Tip: if you don’t have people (who you listen to) telling you regularly that you’re wrong, you are probably really fucking wrong almost all of the time.
I say «imperceptibly» because it isn’t. People know. They might not be talking about it. But there are people who know. Always, in my experience.

Really enjoyed this RFC from @bcantrill.bsky.social on LLMs at Oxide. Feels like a good summary of where my brain is with things. My framing has been "tools can help us, humans can understand us" as to when, how, and more the point the Why and What of LLM use. rfd.shared.oxide.computer/rfd/0576
