NEW: More than half the U.S. is in drought. But few places are dealing with the kind of crisis facing Corpus Christi, Tex., which could see water demand outstrip supply w/in a year. One official told me: "This is actually the canary in the coal mine. 🎁: www.nytimes.com/2026/05/13/u...

On May 21, Stephen Colbert will air his last Late Show. It’s not just that we’re losing him. It’s that dark forces are taking him from us. At the height of his ability, importance and popularity. The injustice of it makes it more than just a feeling of loss. It’s also a feeling of anger. 2/

I just repeated the analysis for grants in fiscal year 2026. I found 98 grants with title changes upon administrative (non-competitive) renewal. Here is the removed word cloud for fiscal year 2026. 4/5

Last year I looked at NIH grants for which the the titles had changed in the course of administrative renewal. These title changes were part of the negotiations required between program officers and applicants (a process referred to as "remediation" by Deputy Director Jon Lorsch). 1/5

Less than 800 NSF grants awarded over the first half of the fiscal year for the entire country. Previous years were already over 2-3k awards by now. It is not particularly overdramatic to say we are seeing the death of federally funded science research in the United States.

The Justice Dept’s theory of the case— that the group that single-handedly disassembled the Ku Klux Klan defrauded its donors by concealing that it was using paid informant to do that work and more— has about as much merit as the now-dismissed charges against Jim Comey.

We posted about this a few days ago. The EPA is trying to roll back protections against ethylene oxide, a chemical that causes leukemia and breast cancer, in communities that are already overburdened with pollution. The public comment period is open right now.

For every one of us who has complained that Democrats aren't doing enough, it’s up to us to demand a better party. The way to demand that party is to support fighters during this primary season.

Majority of Senate opposes proceeding with approps package - clear sign that a deal has been made. The deal is almost definitely what was reported this morning that the WH signed off on: - passage of all approps (including nearly $1 trillion for Defense) except DHS - short (1 or 2 week) CR for DHS.
