I came to this country as a child refugee. No English, no certainty, no idea what my life could become. Britain gave me refuge. Not on a timer, not with conditions attached, but with a chance to grow roots. A thread 🧵 1/8 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Well, well, well... 80% of "donations" to Nigel Farage’s party are from donors or companies based overseas. This is not normal. And the public deserves to know what these super-rich donors want back in return.

Dowman was petulant, but he’s a 16 year old lad who was getting kicked all evening. Perhaps the ref could try protecting him before punishing the reaction. Fewer fixtures, none of that quadruple nonsense. We’ll crowdfund the £150k Carabao Cup winner's prize money if we have to. 🙄

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

Serbia’s students turned disaster into defiance, grief into solidarity, and less than two years of resistance into victory. They built something new. They broke a grip on power that seemed unbreakable. Let this travel far beyond Serbia: Power is not permanent. Hope is not foolish.

The people of Serbia celebrating the defeat of the dictator who held full authoritarian control of their country for nearly 14 years. This is what democracy looks like.

Video calling. Once the stuff of science fiction, in an age when an international phone call could cost a small fortune. Now I can call a friend in New Zealand, patch in friends in the USA and Seychelles, and we can all see and speak to each other. For free. We forget how extraordinary that is.

Take a moment to remember what we promised Brexit would deliver: a well-funded NHS, less immigration, more jobs, flourishing businesses with no red tape, easy to get on the housing ladder, boom time for farming, fishing and steel industries... I do hope you're enjoying it.

You cannot appease bigotry. You can only feed it. And every concession merely sharpens its appetite. “Every generation has to fight the same battles for peace and justice, for there is no final victory and no final defeat... ...So toughen up, bloody toughen up.” Tony Benn

There's something profoundly absurd about British politics. Ten years after a referendum fought on misleading promises, scaremongering and barely thought-through plans, we're still treating its result as some sacred democratic commandment. 🧵

Yet we're apparently expected to believe that the democratic will of Britain was permanently settled on 23 June 2016. That the opinions of people who voted then matter more than those of people living here now. It's an extraordinary distortion of democracy.

The 2016 vote mattered. But it was not a blood oath, a constitutional commandment or a permanent surrender of our right to reconsider. Democracy isn't the preservation of yesterday's decisions. It's the freedom to make tomorrow's. #RejoinEU

But here's the real absurdity. Somehow, respecting democracy has come to mean treating one vote, taken by one electorate, at one moment in history, as an instruction that must never be questioned or reversed. That's not how democracy works.

Democracy is living, breathing and evolving. We have general elections. We have by-elections. Governments change. Policies change. People change their minds. Nobody suggests that the result of a general election must bind the country for eternity.

Brexit was, in large part, the product of a Conservative Party civil war. An internal political dispute was elevated into a decision about the country's entire future. And those responsible had remarkably little idea what to do when they won.

Particularly frustrating when you remember large swathes of the media defending rugby teams kicking the shit out of Wenger sides. They had no duty to anyone to 'play the right way' and Arsenal just needed to suck it up.

Arsenal’s burden, which is seemingly heavier than most other teams’, is that we have to win the *right* way. We either please them or our manager has to “defend” why we didn’t make them happy. This burden is assigned to us by the media - but also by a chunk of our own supporters. It is absurd.
