a really common opinion i'm seeing from my friends in the software industry is that AI takes away the fun / easy parts of the job, but it's not like your workload goes down as a result, so you spend an increasing fraction of your time doing the shittiest tasks

Brian Merchant@bcmerchant.bsky.social

Across the US, workers are souring on AI. The tech industry has insisted that AI would make workers’ lives easier and more productive, that the more people understood and used AI, the more they would like it. Something closer to the opposite has happened.

I’m doing something I almost never do. Riding the 8 eastbound at rush hour.

I-5 southbound at the Moda Center will be closed for over a month. In my view, this is a test run for when we get rid of I-5 in the inner eastside altogether. That won't happen without generational investment in transit and years of work... but it DEFINITELY won't happen if we don't talk about it.

This is not the most important thing, but now I'm super curious: Why is the Declaration of Independence behind a curtain in the Oval Office?

Today I was driving north on 12th Ave in Seattle's Roosevelt neighborhood. It's a one-way street. The car to the right of me completely ignored the red light at 67th St. Not 30 seconds later I had to move over to make room for a car going the wrong way. BuT WHy doN't CyCListS folLOw traFfiC laWS?!?

Bid limits—prohibiting local governments from performing their own work over a certain dollar value—are a form of privatization that increases the cost of government.

Our crew-built work is one big way that we’re delivering the Seattle Transportation Levy. By using in-house construction crews, we complete improvements that you’ve requested with lower costs and faster timelines. Here are 9 recently completed projects from our inspector’s camera roll:

If Democrats haven't announced their proposal for the Donald Trump No Guns in Public bill by the end of the day, they're missing an easy shot

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that. But it's just a very unfortunate incident."

Jan. 9, 1776: A 47-page pamphlet is published in Philadelphia that will alter the course of history. “Common Sense” by an anonymous writer calling himself “An Englishman”—Thomas Paine—takes up the once-unthinkable idea of American independence and concludes: “ 'TIS TIME TO PART.” 1/10

it's so grotesque that many can't stomach it but they're doing this because they want to kill people for fun everything about oil or drugs or regime change is post hoc rationalization for the fact that they want to push red buttons and kill people

ryan is right. people HATE hearing this. but it is just a matter of simple incentives. if you want a more representative legislature — and if you want a legislature more resistant to corruption — then you need to jack up the salaries. serving as mayor of NYC should net you a cool 500K *at least*

ryan cooper@ryanlcooper.com

people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up

"No Kings" illustrates the uncomfortable truth about US politics: That the > 50% of white US people that want to turn the US into a white ethnostate (their words) is a lot of people. But the > 40% of white US people that don't want this, plus > 50% of brown people and > 90% of Black people, is more.

the thing I love about Zohran’s campaign is that instead of “this place fucking sucks and I alone can fix it” his message is “being a New Yorker rules, we live in the best city in the world, let’s make it even better together” show some damn pride in the places you want to govern

I think you should be able to buy a cup of coffee or a bite to eat in America’s urban parks, and that the refusal to allow this is rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of what urban parks are, and what purpose they serve.

Warren Wells, AICP@warrenjwells.bsky.social

American park concession policy drives me insane. Here I am with my kid at the biggest park in Berkeley. There are hundreds of people here at birthday parties, playing tennis/basketball/frisbee, and running the dogs. And yet the closest place to buy a *coffee* is a half mile walk.

If we’re being honest, the biggest threat to urban livability isn’t density or height. It’s the noise, danger, pollution, and wasted space that comes from prioritizing cars above all other modes of transport.

Illustrating, once again, why the effort to keep Seattle green should be about planting trees and preserving them in PUBLIC spaces, rather than a neighbor-vs.-neighbor battle in the media every time a homeowner wants to build on their own property. komonews.com/news/local/c...

How about it, @atg.wa.gov? These fucking goons are snatching up our neighbors and targeting union organizers. So why don't we fight back?

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

Martin O'Malley just mentioned state attorneys general filing state kidnapping charges. Just imagine the collective cheer in this country if state troopers pulled over, arrested and cuffed a van full of masked ICE fascists.

If people won't pay a few dollars to drive on a road, the traffic on that road is a few dollars problem and maybe we shouldn't spend hundreds of millions to solve a few dollars problem.

Science Question: When they say "8 MEGA ROLLS EQUALS 32 REGULAR ROLLS" do the regular rolls exist...anywhere? Are they just in the imaginations of toilet paper marketers??? Do they make one tiny "regular" roll per year just to keep the story alive?

Just under 20% of Bothell has been paved because we have built it or mandated it, creating the traffic and pollution our residents say they want less of. Our heat island map is basically a parking map. We should do things that work to make our lives better instead of subsidizing our problems.

Anna Fahey@trufahey.bsky.social

Parking mandates are pavement mandates.
