A word of tremendous appreciation for the universities and graduate programs that make submitting letters of recommendation a 2 min process (rather than a 30+ min ordeal of cutting and pasting from a letter with all the same deets). The letter writing should be the work, not submitting it. No?

Career highlights getting to speak with 250 first-year elementary (primary) education students at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland…followed by giving a keynote at the Leadership for Inclusion in the Early Years inaugural conference ☘️

Have we given too much "credit" to the pandemic for learning losses? Almost 50% of the post-pandemic decline in achievement on 8th grade NAEP was to be expected (without the pandemic!), simply using the same rate of declining achievement that began unfolding starting in 2013!

This provocative, data-infused essay by James Wyckoff — edworkingpapers.com/ai25-1197 — serves as a reminder that fully understanding the declines in student achievement requires us to look well before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Such an encouraging experience at #SMU Simmons College of Education “fireside” chatting with Drs. Bianca Baldridge & Toni Harrison-Kelly about educational equity…yep, equity. Shout out to Simmons students, faculty, and administration for putting on this event in these times.

🙋‍♂️Teaching a class session on #stereotype threat and achievement disparities assoc with race. Dang, getting a handle on what has/hasn’t replicated, the meta-analyses (and re-meta-analyses), & intervention meta-analyses is no gimme. Any rec’s for good summary pieces I could assign to undergrads?

EXCLUSIVE: Tonight at the Kennedy Center, Guster brought on cast members from Finn, an LGBTQ+ kids musical that was recently canceled when Trump took over the center. They performed the band’s song “Hard Times” to a standing ovation. Full story, exclusive quotes and video on The Handbasket:

Closing rural post offices will do the same thing that closing rural schools has done: Empty out rural towns. Why? To sell off farmland for rock bottom prices to the oligarchs. Water and mineral rights and CAFOs polluting with impunity. It’s been the plan for decades.

I’m not surprised, but it doesn’t ease my anger, frustration, & disappointment as an alum & faculty member. Please miss me with any more talk of being the “leaders & best” moving forward. I’ve always been critical of this concept, but it rings especially hollow now. #AcademicSky

BREAKING: The University of Michigan is closing its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, a major retreat for a school that has long championed its progressive values.

In all seriousness, what is the plan for getting these apparently innocent young asylum seekers—dads, workers, dutifully checking in with US immigration—out of a foreign prison where they are facing torture and dehumanization while officials do Barbie poses in front of them?

After spending Friday finishing up reviews: why aren’t more journals assigning AI as 1 of the 3 reviewers? With it able to use curated knowledge (& detect stats errors etc.), is there a downside, if 1-2 humans are in the mix? You had me at “33% less time reviewing.” #giverobotsthenotsofunjobs

Last night I found out that the NSF math postdoctoral fellowship I applied for is being deleted because it does not comply with Trump’s executive orders on DEI in the federal government. I’m going to answer some FAQs and share some thoughts about this ordeal in this thread 1/n

Hey if anyone is considering backing up any datasets for some reason today, the Open Science Framework has free storage up to 5G/private repository, and up to 50G/public repository. (The OSF is run by a 501c3 (Center for Open Science), so if you do this you might also consider making a donation.)

An employee working for an agency funded by federal grants working in HIV care just told me that their manager said the CDC website is expected to come down "in its entirey" and "to save what they might need." Targethiv.org, run by the Health Resources and Services Administration, is already down.

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.
