I'm committed to posting on BlueSky because I do think it's important for progressive intellectuals to see photos of my dog.

Matthew Yglesias @mattyglesias.bsky.social

I’m committed to posting on BlueSky because I do think it’s important for progressive intellectuals to hear from someone who is outside the left-most 90% of the population. Something I see over and over again is a desire to unlock some semiotic key that will “disqualify” Republicans.

So the women in the first photo were indeed "dressed like witches", because their (now ceremonial) uniform was established around the same era witches were put on trial in New England. The truth is: witches are CREATED out of respectable older women by accusation & this is what they wore.

More footage from Moscow region, Russians keep bolting metal mesh barriers onto energy infrastructure, likely to guard against drone strikes, or what they call "debris."

Hell yeah, @mims.bsky.social did a Southern EV road trip sequel to last year's CA adventure. A lot of overlap with my own trip in Nov/Dec. I only regret he picked the Supercharger at the Casey Jones museum and missed out on the Tina Turner shrine a few miles away. 🔌💡🚗 www.wsj.com/business/aut...

wsj.comI Took America’s Cheapest EV Into the Charging Desert of the Deep SouthReaders challenged our columnist to take an affordable electric car on a route with less-than-ideal charging options. Here’s what happened.

This wasn’t a unique opinion. Most urban planners feel this way. They actually believe they are doing a better job than their international peers because they hold more meetings.

Making myself angry for no reason at all remembering the American transit planner that went to Amsterdam and was appalled at how little stakeholder engagement they did in favor of actually building shit.

No matter where you shop, you're getting screwed by Amazon. Amazon has found a way to make everything you buy - at Target, at a mom-and-pop shop, even direct from the manufacturer - more expensive. And they're not the only one: Expedia's done the same thing, but for hotel rooms.

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

This is quite a story - and a warning about academic citations even well before LLMs. I think we need to return to footnote citations that explain HOW the reference relates to the claim made in the text. Drive-by citations are too slippery.

Alfie Kohn@alfiekohn.bsky.social

Fascinating account showing how a false claim can become widely accepted (and propagated by multiple independent sources) as a result of a common academic shortcut: citing a source you haven't actually read after seeing it cited by another source: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

One of my favorite classic rock anecdotes is that "American Woman" by the Guess Who (Canadian band) was meant to be interpreted literally. Like, ”No, srsly, I don't like dating shallow American groupies. Canadian chicks are better.”

This is a thing confirmed by research, to an extent. It’s also why ensuring content shows up in retrieval and in training data is the new battleground.

Der Fisher@blackholefun.bsky.social

Unpopular opinion: LLMs are generally deradicalizing people whose beliefs are based on pure propaganda. I've been watching this happen slowly with some people I care about. ChatGPT is one of the reasons they finally accept that the NRA, OAN, and NewsMax are lying to them.
